The surrounding public lands are managed largely by the Bureau of Land Management, with wide-open access for driving backroads, dispersed sightseeing, and viewing the Sonoma and East ranges. Sonoma Peak, at 9,396 feet, dominates the skyline east of the valley and draws hikers and hunters during cooler months. Rye Patch Reservoir, reached from I-80 south of Winnemucca, is the closest developed water recreation. Its 72 miles of shoreline and roughly 11,000 acres of surface water support boating, swimming, and a warm-water fishery that includes walleye, white bass, crappie, and catfish, with shoreline camping at West Side - Rye Patch State Recreation Area. In Winnemucca, travelers can restock at full-service grocery and hardware stores, tour the Humboldt Museum, and take in the Buckaroo Hall of Fame. The town works well as a fuel, laundry, and provisioning stop between longer legs on I-80.

This is the busiest RV season, and in-town parks in Winnemucca fill quickly around rodeo weekends and holidays. Carry extra water and plan shade or early starts for outdoor activity. Cell coverage is reliable along the I-80 corridor and in Winnemucca, then drops off quickly once vehicles turn south onto Grass Valley Road. State Route 294 is paved for about five miles into the valley, after which the route becomes unimproved dirt. Low-clearance motorhomes should stay on paved and maintained gravel routes. Services, including diesel, propane, dump stations, groceries, and RV repair, are concentrated in Winnemucca. There are no fuel stops within the valley itself, so fill tanks before heading south. Wildfire risk is real in summer and early fall.
