Campgrounds and RV parks near Jal, NM

The main draw within striking distance of Jal is Monahans Sandhills State Park, where visitors can rent sand discs at headquarters and slide down dunes that reach up to 70 feet. The park has no marked trails, so exploration on foot or horseback is open across roughly 3,840 acres of rolling sand. The Dunagan Visitor Center covers the natural and cultural history of the dunes, and an 800-acre equestrian area is set aside for riders. In Jal itself, a well-known steel silhouette monument depicting a cattle drive stands on a ridge west of town and is a popular photo stop. Stargazing is strong region-wide thanks to minimal light pollution outside the oilfields, and drives on US-62/180 and NM-18 pass through wide-open shortgrass country.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Jal. From March through May and again from September into November, daytime highs sit in a range that works well for hiking the Monahans dunes or spending time outside without the peak of summer heat. Wildflowers appear across the shortgrass country in spring, and cooler evenings make campfire time pleasant. Summer, from June through August, brings intense sun and daytime highs regularly in the mid-90s Fahrenheit. This period also carries the region's late-summer thunderstorm pattern, with the highest chance of afternoon and evening storms and the year's heaviest rainfall totals. Shade is minimal at Monahans and at most parks in town, so sites without a shelter can feel exposed. Winters are short, dry, and often windy, with cold nights that regularly dip below freezing. Most parks stay open year round, but travelers should be prepared for sudden cold fronts and blowing dust.

The area around Jal is working oil country. Travelers should expect flare stacks on the horizon, occasional truck traffic on rural highways, and some engine or train noise near town. Cell coverage is generally good on major carriers along US-62/180 and NM-18, and grocery and fuel stops are available in Jal, Eunice, and Hobbs. Campgrounds in town tend to be practical rather than scenic: level gravel pads, full hookups, laundry, and not much shade. Monahans Sandhills offers a different feel, with water and electric at each site, a dump station, restrooms with showers, and shade shelters, but no sewer at individual sites. Wind and blowing sand are the most common complaints at the dunes, so secure awnings and outdoor gear before leaving the site.
