Campgrounds and RV parks near Wanakah, NY

Lake Erie access drives most itineraries. Evangola State Park features an arc-shaped shoreline and natural sand beach on Lake Erie, with low cliffs of Angola shale lining the edge of the beach, plus picnic facilities, baseball, tennis, and basketball courts. The park also has an 18-hole disc golf course that is moderately wooded and hilly with views along the shore of Lake Erie. Windmill Point Park is built around a 12-acre spring-fed quarry that allows swimming, fishing, and scuba diving. Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores offers on-site family attractions for registered guests, including a large sandy beachfront plus a water park, mini golf, and sports courts. Off-site, day trips include Niagara Falls, downtown Buffalo, the Erie Canal at Lockport, and the Chautauqua wine country to the southwest.

The camping season in this corner of western New York is short and concentrated. At Evangola State Park, while the park is open year-round, the camping season generally extends from early May until the end of October, and private parks nearby follow a similar window. Windmill Point Park is open seasonally from May 1 through October 15. Winter camping options in the immediate area are very limited. Summer is peak season. Warm lake temperatures, lifeguarded beaches, and school-break demand push weekends to capacity, especially at waterfront resorts. Book several months out for July and August, and expect neighbors. Evangola features three distinct camping loops, and sites are generally spacious but offer limited seclusion, with many campsites lacking natural shade. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Lake Erie remains chilly through most of May, so early-season trips are better suited to hiking and birdwatching than swimming. September delivers mild days, active bird migration, and lower campground demand before parks close for the season.

State park check-in is straightforward. Evangola offers a beach, several nature trails, pavilions, picnic tables, playing fields, a playground, and campsites with showers and a dump station, most facilities are accessible to the disabled, and the beach is within walking distance of the campground. Bring proof of vaccination for pets. Current proof of rabies inoculation is required at check-in, and metal tags will not be accepted. Quiet hours are from 10PM to 8AM and are strictly enforced, and firewood movement is restricted to limit invasive pests. Private resorts vary. Windmill Point centers on quarry swimming rather than a lake beach, and Sun Retreats Sherkston Shores functions as a gated resort with on-site amenities and beach access included in the stay. Cell coverage is generally good across the Wanakah to Fort Erie corridor, but expect slower Wi-Fi at busy waterfront sites.
