Camping near Belwood, North Carolina
Belwood is a small community in Cleveland County in the western Piedmont of North Carolina, positioned between Shelby and Morganton. The area sits at the crossroads of rolling farmland and the foothills that lead up to the South Mountains, giving RV travelers quick access to both lake recreation and mountain trails within a short drive.
Campgrounds close to Belwood range from full-hookup private parks along NC-18 to a large state park with a developed family loop. Buffalo Creek Campground in Lawndale provides a base close to South Mountains State Park, which covers 20,949 acres and includes part of the South Mountains, the highest peaks in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
For lake-based trips, Moss Lake Campground and Indian Springs Campground offer waterfront and wooded sites within a short drive south. Hidden Trails RV Park rounds out the private options for renters who want hookups and easy highway access to both the lake and the state park.
Things to do around Belwood
Hiking is the headline activity. South Mountains State Park has an extensive trail network through rugged terrain, and the most popular route is the High Shoals Falls Loop Trail, which leads to an 80-foot waterfall. Some waterfall areas and trails can be closed for safety, so check current conditions before arrival.
On the water, John H. Moss Lake covers more than 2,000 acres with 57 miles of shoreline and ten public boat ramps for easy lake access, making it a good spot for fishing, boating, and kayaking. Trout fishing is available in park streams at South Mountains, and an NC fishing license plus a trout stamp are required.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV trips in this part of the Piedmont. March through May brings mild temperatures, wildflowers along the South Mountains trails, and active trout streams. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color from mid-October into early November, and is one of the busiest times for campground reservations.
Summers are hot and humid, with regular afternoon thunderstorms. Lakeside sites at Moss Lake stay popular for swimming and fishing, and the higher elevations inside South Mountains State Park usually feel a few degrees cooler than the valleys around Belwood.
Winter is quieter but usable. South Mountains State Park is open year round except Christmas Day, and private parks along NC-18 typically stay open as well. Expect occasional freezing nights, brief snow or ice events, and shorter daylight hours for setting up camp.
How to book campgrounds near Belwood
North Carolina state park sites are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations can be made for today and up to six months in advance, and there is a two-night minimum stay on holiday weekends for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. The family campground at South Mountains State Park is small and fills quickly, especially on weekends, so book early for peak dates.
Private parks use their own systems. Reservations at Moss Lake Campground can be made online through Campspot, and Buffalo Creek Campground, Indian Springs Campground, and Hidden Trails RV Park each handle bookings directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect on the ground
Cell coverage is unreliable inside South Mountains State Park. Cell service is essentially nonexistent from any carrier, and the park gates close at posted times each evening, so late arrivals are not possible. All campers must stop at the visitor center to register their vehicle and receive a hang tag before setting up.
Rig size matters at the state park. RVs up to 50 feet are technically permitted, though the narrow, winding layout makes anything larger than a 26-foot travel trailer difficult to maneuver. Private parks along NC-18 generally handle bigger rigs with less trouble.
At Moss Lake, expect a compact lakeside layout with 28 wooded sites, 12 of which are full hookup, plus a dump station and heated bathhouse.
