Campgrounds and RV parks near Bessemer City, NC

Hiking is the main draw. Crowders Mountain State Park has trails to the Pinnacle and Crowders Mountain summit, plus rock-climbing routes on its cliff faces, with roughly 20 miles of trail at the Sparrow Springs access. The 1.8-mile Ridgeline Trail straddles the North Carolina and South Carolina border and connects Kings Mountain State Park to Kings Mountain National Military Park and Crowders Mountain State Park. Kings Mountain State Park adds fishing, paddling, and history. The park has miles of forested trails, two fishing lakes with boat rentals, an equestrian trail, and a Living History Farm that recreates an early 19th-century Piedmont farm with a barn, cotton gin, blacksmith, and carpenter shop. Moss Lake is the water-recreation option. John H. Moss Lake covers about 2,000 acres with 57 miles of shoreline, and the area has 10 public boat ramps for fishing, boating, and water sports.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for an RV trip. Daytime highs run comfortable, humidity is lower than in summer, and leaf color peaks in late October and early November. Kings Mountain State Park is a popular spot for fall color, and weekends during peak color fill early. Wildflowers along Crowders Mountain trails and mild temperatures make April and May equally popular. Summer is hot and humid. Summers are hot and muggy while winters are cold and wet, and temperatures typically vary from the low 30s to near 90 over the course of the year. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August, and biting insects are active. August is the wettest month. Early-morning hikes on Crowders Mountain or Kings Mountain trails help travelers avoid the worst of the heat and crowded parking lots, which often fill by mid-morning on summer weekends. Winter camping is possible but limited. Overnight lows dip below freezing, and the region sees occasional ice and light snow from December through March. Statewide burn bans can also be in effect during dry stretches, and when one is in place all open fires including campfires and charcoal are prohibited at North Carolina state parks.

Site setups vary widely across the area. At Kings Mountain State Park each site is packed gravel with individual water and electrical hookups, several sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and the campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers. The narrow, winding access road requires careful navigation for larger rigs, sites pack closely together with minimal privacy screening, most feature gravel pads of varying levelness, and longer RVs may need extra leveling blocks. Moss Lake Campground is smaller and quieter. Operated by the city of Kings Mountain, it has 28 sites for tents and RVs, with electric, water, and sewer hookups available at many sites, a picnic table and fire ring at each site, and hot showers. Some pads are unlevel, so leveling blocks are useful. Inside Crowders Mountain State Park, expect a hike-in experience only. Sites are reached by a one-mile trail from the Sparrow Springs parking area, each has a grill, picnic table, and tent pads, and drinking water and vault toilets are provided.
