Campgrounds and RV parks near Camden, NC

Water activities dominate the trip list. Currituck Sound is shallow and protected, which makes it well suited to kayaking, paddleboarding, and light-tackle fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, and speckled trout. Boat ramps at Bells Island Campground and Outer Banks West / Currituck Sound KOA Holiday give renters direct access to the sound and the Intracoastal Waterway. Day trips fill the rest of an itinerary. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla is climbable, and the wild horses on the north beach are reachable by 4WD tour. Merchants Millpond State Park, west of Camden in Gates County, offers cypress-swamp paddling and short hiking loops for day use. In Elizabeth City, the Museum of the Albemarle covers regional maritime history and works well as a rainy-afternoon stop.

Late spring and early fall are the strongest windows for RV travel here. April through early June brings warm days, tolerable humidity, and manageable insect pressure, while September and October deliver cooler nights, lighter crowds, and steady fishing on Currituck Sound. Reservations for these shoulder months still fill quickly on weekends but are workable a few weeks out. Summer is peak season. Sites at waterfront parks book heavily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, driven by families heading to the northern Outer Banks. Expect heat, humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, and mosquitoes near marsh sites. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk from mid-August through October; renters should watch the National Hurricane Center outlook and confirm the campground's evacuation policy before arrival. Winter is the quiet season. Some private campgrounds reduce services or close sections from December through February, though North Landing Beach Campground And RV operates year-round. Verify the operating calendar before booking a cold-weather trip.

Terrain is flat, sandy, and near sea level. Sites tend to be grass or gravel with mature shade at the inland parks and more open sun exposure at the waterfront ones. Cell coverage is generally reliable near US-158 and thins out on the peninsulas and marsh roads leading to the sound. Most private parks offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, a dump station, potable water, and Wi-Fi of variable strength. Bathhouses, laundry, boat ramps, and small camp stores are common. Insects are a real factor from late spring through early fall, so screens, repellent, and awning bug lights are worth packing. The last miles into waterfront campgrounds often use two-lane rural roads with soft shoulders. Drive them in daylight when possible, and watch for low branches on side lanes.
