Campgrounds and RV parks near Cape Colony, NC

Water dominates the itinerary. The Chowan River, Albemarle Sound, and Scuppernong River all support fishing, kayaking, and pontoon touring, and public boat ramps are common along the shore. Historic Edenton, one of North Carolina's oldest towns, is a short drive from Cape Colony and offers walkable colonial streets, the 1767 Chowan County Courthouse, and waterfront parks that work well for a rest day off the RV. For wildlife and paddling, Merchants Millpond State Park is the standout: a 760-acre millpond of old-growth bald cypress at the northernmost breeding range of the American alligator, with paddle-in campsites and canoe rentals. Pettigrew State Park protects Lake Phelps, one of the oldest natural lakes in the eastern United States, and is a major wintering site for tundra swans.

The climate is humid subtropical: hot, muggy summers and cool, damp winters. Peak visitor traffic runs June through August, when Edenton and the surrounding parks are busiest and summer thunderstorms bring frequent heavy rainfall. Bugs, especially mosquitoes and ticks, are heaviest in the swampier parks from late spring through early fall, so screened rigs and repellent matter. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. March through May brings wildflowers, warming water, and mild highs; September through November delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and the arrival of tundra swans at Lake Phelps by late fall. The Atlantic hurricane season peaks from August into October, and coastal-plain tracks can bring wind and flooding rain to the Albemarle region. Winter is quiet and mild by North American standards, with occasional light snow. It is a strong season for birding at Pettigrew State Park, though campers should note that both Pettigrew and Merchants Millpond family campgrounds are currently closed for renovation, leaving private parks near Edenton and Windsor as the reliable year-round option.

Sites near Cape Colony lean rural. Expect two-lane county roads, low bridges over blackwater creeks, and gravel or grass pads at the smaller parks. Cell coverage is generally good along US 17 and around Edenton but can drop inside Merchants Millpond State Park and along the Scuppernong River corridor. Bring bug spray, sunscreen, and gear for shallow-water paddling. Alligators live at Merchants Millpond, so pets should stay leashed near the water. Grocery, propane, and dump-station stops are easiest in Edenton; farther west, Windsor near Cashie River Campground and RV Park is the main resupply town. Cypress-lined swamps mean tannin-stained water that stains hulls and pet paws, and mud is normal after rain.
