Campgrounds and RV parks near Clemmons, NC

Outdoor activity centers on the Yadkin River corridor and the Sauratown Mountains. Pilot Mountain rises more than 2,000 feet above the surrounding piedmont and offers miles of trails, camping, climbing, and scenery, with the mountain summit connected to the Yadkin River section by a 6.5-mile trail corridor and canoe access on the river. Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed on portions of the park's steep cliffs, which look out toward the Sauratown Mountains and Blue Ridge. Closer to town, private campgrounds such as Forest Lake RV and Camping Resort and Lake Myers RV and Camping Resort run on-site pools, fishing lakes, and kid-focused activities. Cross Winds Family Campground and Carolina Rose Campground work well for quieter stays and day trips into downtown Winston-Salem, Old Salem, and the wineries of the Yadkin Valley.

The camping calendar in this part of North Carolina is shaped by state park seasons and shoulder-season weather. At Pilot Mountain State Park, the family campground season runs from March 15 through November 30, while the canoe-in sites on the Yadkin River are open year-round. Several private RV parks in and around Clemmons also operate on a March-to-early-December window, so winter travelers should confirm dates directly with the operator before arriving. Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for camping, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Wildflowers and hardwood leaf-out draw hikers to Pilot Mountain in April and May, while October brings peak fall color across the Sauratown range. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; shaded sites and hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are worth prioritizing. Winter is mild by North American standards but can bring occasional ice and snow. Most private campgrounds keep a reduced footprint open, while the Pilot Mountain family campground remains closed until mid-March.

Site quality varies by park type. Private resorts near Clemmons typically offer paved or gravel pads, full hookups, cable and Wi-Fi, laundry, and pool access, and can accommodate larger rigs and slide-outs. Big-rig travelers should still confirm site length and pull-through availability when booking. State park camping is more rustic. Pilot Mountain's 42-site family campground for tents and trailers is scattered among oaks and hickories, with each site offering a tent pad, picnic table, and fire ring or grill. Drinking water is available throughout the campground and two bathhouses provide hot showers. Some sites can accommodate RVs, but no hookups or dump station are provided. Gathering wood in the park is prohibited, so plan to buy firewood on site from the camp host or bring certified heat-treated wood. Cell coverage is generally solid across the Clemmons area and along I-40, and thinner in the mountain sections of Pilot Mountain.
