Campgrounds near Cliffside, North Carolina
Cliffside sits in Rutherford County in the foothills of western North Carolina, along the Second Broad and Broad Rivers. The village is small, so RV travelers typically base out of nearby campgrounds in Forest City, Mooresboro, and just across the state line in Gaffney, South Carolina. The area is a practical stop between Charlotte and Asheville and puts campers within reach of the Blue Ridge foothills, Chimney Rock State Park, and the I-85 corridor.
Options run from small owner-run parks to larger family campgrounds. Yates RV Resort campground is a ten-site full-hookup park in Forest City geared toward quiet stays and longer bookings. Foothills Family Campground, also in Forest City, is a larger year-round park with a pool and mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Broad River Campground in Mooresboro spans 90 acres near the Broad River with cabins, glamping domes, and 56 full-hookup RV sites.
South of Cliffside, Turtle Creek Campground in Gaffney offers RV-only sites off I-85 exit 87, and Spacious Skies Peach Haven sits in the Upstate near the Gaffney Peachoid.
Things to do near Cliffside
Outdoor activity centers on the Broad River and its tributaries. The Broad River Greenway offers hiking, biking, and horseback trails, and the river itself is used for tubing, kayaking, and fishing. Broad River Campground has golf-cart and trail access to the greenway and a small creek on property. Chimney Rock State Park and Lake Lure are within a short drive to the northwest for climbing, waterfall hikes, and swimming.
Guests staying at Spacious Skies Peach Haven or Turtle Creek Campground are close to Cowpens National Battlefield and Kings Mountain National Military Park, both Revolutionary War sites with visitor centers and interpretive trails. Gaffney adds outlet shopping and, in mid-July, the South Carolina Peach Festival. Boiling Springs, Shelby, and Forest City provide grocery runs, restaurants, and fuel stops.

The Cliffside area is a year-round camping destination, but conditions and demand vary sharply by season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Fall foliage in the surrounding foothills draws heavy weekend traffic in October and early November, and riverfront sites at Broad River Campground book out early for peak color weekends.
Summer brings hot, humid afternoons and frequent thunderstorms, along with the highest demand at family-oriented parks with pools like Foothills Family Campground and Broad River Campground. Reserve well ahead for Independence Day weekend, the South Carolina Peach Festival, and Labor Day. Winter stays are quiet, and many parks in the area, including Yates RV Resort campground and Foothills Family Campground, stay open all year.
Tropical remnants are a real consideration from late August through October. Some regional campgrounds have closed temporarily after past storms, so confirm current status with each park before you travel.

This was my first time renting a RV, usually do Airbnb or hotels, but I can honestly say, this was a great experience. The host was very attentive and helpful. It was a very nice RV, comfortable, just big enough for 4 grown adults to fit nicely. Was at a 3 day rodeo event and we also had the deck set up, very nice. However I did bring my own out door rugs to cover some of the stars and strips.

How to book
Most campgrounds near Cliffside are privately owned, so reservations go through each park directly rather than a central agency like Recreation.gov. Broad River Campground and Yates RV Resort campground both use Campspot for real-time availability, and both also accept phone bookings. Foothills Family Campground and Turtle Creek Campground handle reservations by phone or through their own websites. Spacious Skies Peach Haven books through the Spacious Skies Campgrounds site.
For weekend stays in spring, fall, and summer holidays, plan to book four to eight weeks ahead. Ask about big-rig access, 50-amp availability, maximum rig length, and pet policies at time of booking, since rules and site dimensions vary by park.
What to expect on site
Campgrounds around Cliffside skew toward full-hookup RV sites with 20, 30, and 50-amp service, picnic tables, and fire rings. Broad River Campground offers 56 back-in RV sites with full hookups, plus cabins, glamping domes, a pool, playground, and camp store, and can accommodate rigs up to about 44 feet. Yates RV Resort campground is a smaller ten-site property with concrete pads, a fenced dog area, free Wi-Fi, and a nature trail on 22 acres.
Foothills Family Campground offers about 70 sites and mixes pull-throughs with back-ins. Turtle Creek Campground accepts rigs up to 45 feet with 50/30-amp service. Terrain across the foothills is rolling, so expect some sloped sites and bring leveling blocks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Cliffside, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Cliffside, NC?
An RV rental in Cliffside, NC is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Blue Ridge foothills. Travel trailers typically start around $75 to $125 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $150 to $250 per night, and larger Class A rigs run $200 to $350 per night. You can find a cheaper RV rental in Cliffside by traveling midweek, booking in shoulder season (April or October), or choosing a smaller travel trailer you can tow with a midsize SUV. Pro tip: use the price filter and sort by lowest rate, then message hosts about weekly discounts, since many Rutherford County owners offer 10 to 20 percent off for stays of five nights or more.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cliffside%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Cliffside, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cliffside, NC. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RVs, including Class A motorhomes, fifth wheels, and travel trailers commonly listed on RVezy. You'll need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and we'll verify your ID securely through the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto club before you fly in, usually for under $25. That's it, no test, no extra paperwork, just pack and go.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Cliffside covered if something goes wrong?
You can book your Cliffside RV trip with confidence. Every RVezy booking automatically includes a renter protection plan that covers most damage to the RV, plus 24/7 roadside assistance throughout North Carolina and across the US. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, whether you are heading 20 minutes to Lake Lure or planning a longer motorhome rental in Cliffside up the Blue Ridge Parkway. While this is not a traditional personal auto policy, it provides strong financial peace of mind so a flat tire near Chimney Rock or a chipped windshield on I-74 does not derail your vacation. Help is one phone call away, day or night.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Cliffside RV rental?
Booking is low-risk, which is exactly how it should be. RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy to every reservation, so hosts do not set their own terms, and it includes a grace period after booking where you can cancel for a full refund. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far you are from your trip start date. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credits so you are never left stranded. You can review the full cancellation details on the RVezy Help Center before you confirm. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Rutherford County rigs, then relax knowing you have flexibility if life shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on my Cliffside RV trip?
Yes, bringing your pup along is easy. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental in Cliffside on RVezy and you will see plenty of owners who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats), often for a small cleaning fee of about $25 to $75. Once you are on the road, your co-pilot will love this corner of North Carolina. Lake Lure's Morse Park Meadows has leashed-dog paths and lake access, Chimney Rock State Park welcomes leashed pets on most outdoor trails, and the Broad River Greenway is a quiet leg-stretcher near Cliffside. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet rules and ask about nearby vet clinics in Forest City, just 10 minutes away.
chimneyrockpark.com/plan/pets/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Cliffside?
Yes, RV delivery Cliffside is one of the most popular options, especially for first-time renters. Many Rutherford County hosts will drive the RV directly to your campground, lake house driveway, or family reunion site, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, with popular drop-off spots including Lake Lure Campground, Chimney Rock area sites, and Tryon International Equestrian Center. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it. Pro tip: book delivery if you're nervous about towing or maneuvering a big rig through the winding roads of US-74 Alt.
townoflakelure.com/How far can I travel on an RV rental from Cliffside?
You've got a huge playground within easy reach. From Cliffside, you can reach Asheville in about 1 hour, the Blue Ridge Parkway entrance at Mount Pisgah in 1 hour 30 minutes, Great Smoky Mountains National Park (Cherokee, NC) in about 2 hours 15 minutes, Charlotte in 1 hour 15 minutes, and Myrtle Beach in roughly 4 hours 30 minutes. Hosts set their own mileage policies, with daily allowances usually between 100 and 200 miles, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for a flat fee. Pro tip: if you're planning a Cliffside RV trip up the Parkway, ask the host about an unlimited package upfront. It pays for itself by Linville Falls.
nps.gov/blri/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Cliffside, NC?
You have great options in this part of North Carolina. Lake Lure RV Park and Campground sits about 25 minutes north with full hookups and lake access. The Chimney Rock KOA Holiday in Bostic is roughly 15 minutes away with a pool, cabins, and quick access to Chimney Rock State Park. Cane Creek Campground in Union Mills (about 20 minutes north) is a quieter, family-run option on a trout stream. For RV camping near Cliffside that locals love, try South Mountains State Park near Connelly Springs for rustic sites under hemlock cover, or Lake James State Park about an hour north for paved sites with electric and water. Pro tip: reserve summer weekends 3 to 4 months ahead, especially around July 4 and Labor Day.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/south-mountains-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Cliffside?
Honestly, Cliffside is a near year-round RV destination, and that's part of the magic. Spring (April to early June) brings 65 to 80 degree days and blooming dogwoods. Summer (mid-June to August) is warm at 80 to 90 degrees with afternoon thundershowers, perfect for lake days at Lake Lure. Fall (mid-September to early November) is the crown jewel, with crisp 55 to 75 degree days and world-class leaf color along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Winter (December to February) stays mild at 30 to 55 degrees, and many campgrounds remain open. Pro tip: book your rent an RV in Cliffside experience for the second week of October to catch peak foliage without the Asheville traffic.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be more than okay, you'll be impressed at how doable this is. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, the generator, and dump procedures, and you can text them throughout your trip with questions. First time renting an RV travelers in the Cliffside area often start with a smaller Class C motorhome or a 20 to 25 foot travel trailer, which handle the rolling Rutherford County backroads with ease. Stick to right-lane driving on US-74 and avoid the steepest grades on NC-9 toward Bat Cave until you're comfortable. Pro tip: do a short shakedown night at a nearby campground like Chimney Rock KOA before heading deeper into the mountains.
ncdot.gov/What happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
Take a deep breath, you're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on US-221, a dead battery at a Lake Lure overlook, or a tow back from the Blue Ridge Parkway is just a phone call away. The roadside team can dispatch service across all of North Carolina and the surrounding states. Your host is also a quick text away for quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone the day you pick up, and snap a photo of the VIN and license plate. That way you're ready for anything, even if you're parked deep in Pisgah National Forest with one bar of signal.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/safety.htmCan I take my Cliffside RV rental across state lines?
Yes, you absolutely can, and it's one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Cliffside. Cliffside sits right on the South Carolina border, so popular cross-state routes include Greenville, SC (45 minutes), Charleston, SC (4 hours), the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee (2.5 hours), and Virginia's Shenandoah Valley (4.5 hours). Most hosts allow travel anywhere in the continental US, though some put limits on total mileage or specific states, so confirm in the listing or message before booking. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because protection coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: the Cherohala Skyway between NC and TN is a stunning, RV-friendly alternative to the Tail of the Dragon.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxHow much should I budget for fuel on a Cliffside RV trip?
Fuel is honestly the biggest variable, but it's easy to estimate. Travel trailers don't burn extra gas themselves, just lower your tow vehicle's MPG by about 30 percent. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Gas in Rutherford County tends to run 15 to 25 cents cheaper than Asheville or Charlotte, so fill up at the Sheetz or Ingles in Forest City before heading into the mountains. For a typical 400-mile week from Cliffside up to Asheville and back, budget $150 to $300 in fuel depending on rig size. Pro tip: use GasBuddy and avoid Blue Ridge Parkway-adjacent stations, which run premium prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cliffside?
For the best sites, book sooner rather than later, but you have more flexibility here than at Smokies-area parks. North Carolina State Parks like South Mountains and Lake James open reservations 6 months ahead at ncparks.reserveamerica.com, and summer weekends fill within days. Private parks like Chimney Rock KOA and Lake Lure RV Park typically book 2 to 3 months out for peak weekends and just a few weeks out midweek. For October leaf-peeping, lock in by early August. Pro tip: if you strike out at your first choice, try Cane Creek Campground or Twin Creek RV Resort, which fly under the radar. Pair that with an RV camping Cliffside booking on RVezy and you've got a stress-free trip planned.
ncparks.gov/passes-and-permits/camping-reservationsWhat are the roads like for driving an RV around Cliffside?
Driving here is very manageable, even for new RVers. Cliffside sits in the gently rolling Piedmont foothills, so main routes like US-221, US-74, and US-74 Alt are wide, paved, and RV-friendly. Things get more interesting as you head north toward Lake Lure and Chimney Rock on US-64 and NC-9, where you will find tighter curves and grades of around 6 to 8 percent, so take it slow and use lower gears on descents. The Blue Ridge Parkway has a 45 MPH limit and several tunnels with limited clearance, so check your RV height before entering. Pro tip: check current road conditions on the NCDOT site before you roll out, especially in winter when occasional ice can close higher elevations.
drivenc.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cliffside?
You'll be well taken care of at most local campgrounds. Private parks like Chimney Rock KOA and Lake Lure RV Park offer full hookups (30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer), Wi-Fi, hot showers, laundry, and dump stations. State parks like South Mountains and Lake James have electric and water hookups at most sites plus centralized dump stations and potable water fills. National forest sites in nearby Pisgah are more rustic, expect vault toilets and no hookups, but they're stunning. Need to dump or fill water between stops? The Pilot Travel Center in Forest City off US-74 has a public dump and freshwater fill. Pro tip: carry a 25-foot fresh-water hose and a 30-to-50 amp adapter just in case.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-james-state-parkWhat's included inside RVs you rent near Cliffside?
Pretty much everything you need to live comfortably on the road. RVs listed near Cliffside come fully equipped with sleeping arrangements for 2 to 10 people, a working kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, cookware), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control (roof AC and furnace), and seatbelted travel seats matching the listed sleep count. Most include a TV, and many offer onboard generators for boondocking, solar panels, or built-in Wi-Fi boosters, which are gold in mountain hollows where cell signal dips. Linens, kitchen kits, and outdoor chairs are often available as add-ons. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count and check the Amenities section carefully, then message the host to confirm anything that matters most for your family RV trip Cliffside adventure.
fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-coverageWhat add-ons and pickup options should I expect on a Cliffside RV rental?
You've got great flexibility here. Most Cliffside-area hosts offer add-ons like linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camping kits with chairs and a grill ($25 to $50), generator use ($3 to $5 per hour beyond included time), and bike racks. Pickup is usually at the host's home base in Rutherford, Cleveland, or Polk County, and many offer delivery to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with overage at $0.35 to $0.50 per mile, or flat unlimited packages. Pro tip: if you're planning a campervan rental Cliffside trip up to Asheville and back to the coast, the unlimited mileage option almost always saves money over per-mile pricing.
visitnc.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Cliffside through RVezy, you pay the rental amount, taxes, fees, and any add-ons through the platform using a credit or debit card. A separate refundable security deposit is authorized on your card a few days before your trip starts, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig, and it is held separately from the booking payment. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the agreed fuel and tank levels, that hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff. It takes 60 seconds and protects everyone, so your deposit comes back without a hitch.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I legally park or boondock an RV near Cliffside?
You have solid options for overnight parking near Cliffside. Many Walmart locations in the region, including stores in Forest City and Shelby, may allow free overnight RV parking with a courtesy check-in at customer service, so always confirm with the manager on duty. Cracker Barrel in Forest City is another commonly used overnight stop with permission. For dispersed (free) camping, Pisgah National Forest north of Marion has designated boondocking pull-offs in areas like Wilson Creek, with no hookups but beautiful creekside spots. Rutherford County does not allow overnight street parking in residential areas, so stick to approved lots and campgrounds. Pro tip: use the iOverlander or FreeRoam app to find vetted free spots, and always leave no trace.
