Campgrounds near Davidson, North Carolina
Davidson sits on the eastern shore of Lake Norman in the Charlotte metro area, roughly 25 miles north of uptown Charlotte and a short drive from Mooresville, Cornelius, and Concord. RV travelers use the town as a base for lake recreation, motorsports events, and day trips into the Piedmont. The area's campgrounds cluster around the lake and along the I-77 and I-85 corridors.
Lakeside options include Lake Norman Motor Coach Resort in Sherrills Ford, a gated waterfront property with concrete pads, full hookups, and boat access. Cross Country Campgrounds and Glenwood Acres RV Park serve travelers looking for straightforward hookup sites closer to town, while Apollo RV Park offers additional full-hookup capacity in the corridor.
For race weekends, Camping World Racing Resort at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord is the closest large full-hookup park to the track, with 441 sites just off I-85 Exit 49. Lake Norman State Park, on the northern shoreline near Troutman, adds a state-run option with electric and non-electric sites for smaller rigs and tents.
Things to do near Davidson
Lake Norman drives most trip plans. Boating, fishing, swimming, and paddling are the main draws, and several private lakeside parks provide boat access for guests. Lake Norman State Park adds a public swim beach, a boat ramp, and the Itusi Trail system with nearly 31 miles of single-track mountain biking, along with the Lakeshore Trail and Park Lake for quieter paddling and fishing.
Motorsports fans have Charlotte Motor Speedway, zMAX Dragway, and The Dirt Track in Concord, plus the Richard Petty Driving Experience and NASCAR race shops nearby. Downtown Davidson offers a walkable college-town core around Davidson College, and Birkdale Village in Huntersville, Historic Downtown Mooresville, and Concord Mills are within easy reach for shopping, dining, and family outings.

Davidson has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and cool, damp winters. Camping is viable year-round, but the shoulder seasons of April through early June and September through October offer the most comfortable weather for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity than midsummer.
Summer is peak season on Lake Norman. Weekends fill quickly at private lakeside parks and at Lake Norman State Park, and afternoon thunderstorms are common between June and August. July is the warmest month, with average highs near 91°F and heat index values that can climb well past 100°F. Book early for holiday weekends: North Carolina State Parks enforce a two-night minimum on Friday-Saturday or Saturday-Sunday stays during holiday weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day, though the minimum is waived within seven days of arrival.
Race weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway are their own peak. The Coca-Cola 600 in late May, the Bank of America Roval 400 in early fall, and NHRA events at zMAX Dragway pull demand across the region. Winter is mild but wet, with occasional freezes and brief snow events; the Charlotte area averages only about 5 inches of snow per season.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Cannot say enough good things about our experience renting from Corey. Very helpful with the renting process and what to expect. I chose the drop off option and it went very smooth - Corey gave a detailed rundown of the RV making sure I knew the basics. Everything was as described, well maintained, and just what we were looking for for our few days away. Corey was quick to respond when I had any questions and made sure everything was good. Highly recommend renting from Corey!

How to book campgrounds near Davidson
Lake Norman State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. RV and tent sites can be booked up to six months in advance on a rolling window, and same-day reservations are accepted until 9 p.m. Cabins and group sites carry a two-night minimum and must be booked at least one day ahead. Reservations are treated as no-shows and released if the park is not contacted by 3 p.m. the day after the scheduled arrival.
Private parks including Lake Norman Motor Coach Resort, Cross Country Campgrounds, Apollo RV Park, and Glenwood Acres RV Park take reservations directly through their own websites or third-party platforms. For Camping World Racing Resort, non-event daily camping is available year-round, while race-week bookings follow speedway rules: NASCAR check-in is Monday of race week with checkout the Monday after the Sunday race, and NHRA check-in is Thursday of race week.
What to expect on the ground
Expect gently rolling Piedmont terrain, mixed hardwood and pine cover, and easy interstate access from I-77 and I-85. Private lakeside and speedway parks tend to have concrete or gravel pads with 30 and 50 amp service, water, and sewer. Lake Norman State Park has a bathhouse with hot showers, a dump station, fire rings, and picnic tables, with a mix of electric and non-electric sites and no sewer at individual sites.
Pets are welcome on leashes no longer than six feet, though state park rules bar pets from the swim beach, inside buildings, and in camper cabins. Alcohol is prohibited in North Carolina state parks except at individual campsites, and quiet hours at Lake Norman State Park run from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Big rigs are accommodated at Lake Norman Motor Coach Resort and Camping World Racing Resort; check length and slide-out clearance when booking at smaller private parks.

Plan smart and you'll enjoy the trip more. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 MPG, Class A coaches usually run 7 to 10 MPG, and a tow vehicle with a travel trailer typically lands around 10 to 13 MPG. North Carolina gas prices generally sit slightly below the national average, with most stations near Davidson and along I-77 and I-85 offering competitive pricing. Diesel rigs often feature the fuel-efficient Mercedes Sprinter chassis, which is great for long hauls to Asheville or Charleston. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Davidson?
Sooner is always better around Davidson. North Carolina State Parks like Lake Norman State Park accept reservations in advance through the official NC State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) often book out quickly after opening. For private parks like the campground at Charlotte Motor Speedway, reserve several months ahead for race weekends (Coca-Cola 600, Bank of America Roval), which is when availability vanishes fastest. Pro tip: shoulder-season weekdays in April or October are easier to book and often half the crowd, perfect for a relaxed Lake Norman RV camping experience.
ncparks.gov/passes-and-permits/camping-reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Davidson?
Driving around Davidson is generally easy and RV-friendly. The town sits right off I-77 at exits 28 to 30, with flat to gently rolling terrain and wide rural roads heading toward Lake Norman. Charlotte (about 25 miles south) is the only nearby spot with heavy urban traffic, and rush hours on I-77 and I-85 can be slow between 7 to 9 AM and 4 to 6 PM, so plan around those windows. Heading west to the Blue Ridge, you'll climb steady grades on I-40 past Hickory, nothing extreme, but use lower gears on long descents near Old Fort Mountain. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can pop up quickly. Pro tip: choose delivery from your Davidson host if Charlotte highways feel intimidating, and you'll skip the city driving entirely.
drivenc.gov/What amenities do campgrounds near Davidson offer?
You'll find everything you need close by. Lake Norman State Park offers RV sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, a bathhouse with hot showers, potable water spigots, and an on-site dump station. McDowell Nature Preserve in Charlotte has electric and water hookups plus a dump station, and the campground at Charlotte Motor Speedway provides hookups and big-rig pull-thrus during events. Most private parks around Davidson offer Wi-Fi, laundry, and pools as well. For dumping and fresh water on the road, look for Flying J and Pilot truck stops along I-77, including the Statesville and Mooresville locations. Pro tip: download the SaniDumps app to find dump stations anywhere along your route from Davidson.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-norman-state-park/campingWhat should I expect inside a Davidson RV rental?
You'll feel right at home. Most RVs on RVezy in Davidson come fully equipped with comfortable beds (sleeping anywhere from 2 to 10 people), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with AC and heat, dining tables, and seatbelted seating. Many Davidson hosts also include TVs, Bluetooth speakers, outdoor chairs, a generator for off-grid use, and even bikes or kayaks since Lake Norman is right there. Linens, towels, and starter kitchen supplies are often included or available as add-ons. Each listing on RVezy shows a full amenity list and photos. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and amenities you care about (like generator or solar) to quickly find your perfect Davidson rig.

Davidson hosts are known for being generous with extras. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75 per trip), kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor tables, generators, propane fills, bike racks, kayak and SUP rentals (perfect for Lake Norman), pet packages, and even portable grills. Pickup and dropoff usually happen at the host's home or a designated meeting spot in or near Davidson, and many hosts offer delivery to nearby campgrounds or your driveway for an extra fee. Mileage policies vary by listing, with daily allowances clearly displayed on each rental page along with the per-mile cost for any overage. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when booking to save versus buying gear separately, especially the linen package, which is a huge time-saver.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Davidson%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay for your Davidson RV rental directly through the RVezy platform using a credit or debit card, with the total broken into a deposit at booking and the balance before your trip. A refundable security deposit is held separately and the amount is clearly shown on each listing. As long as you return the rig in the same condition you got it, with no damage and any agreed-upon mileage or generator hours respected, your deposit is released after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and dropoff in Davidson. It's the easiest way to make sure your deposit comes back without any back-and-forth.
