Campgrounds near Dortches, North Carolina
Dortches sits just north of Rocky Mount along the I-95 corridor in eastern North Carolina, putting RV travelers within an easy drive of state park camping, lakefront resorts, and highway-close overnight parks. The area works well as a base for exploring Halifax and Nash counties, a stopover on the New York to Florida run, or a family lake trip.
Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey is a rural, quiet campground just off I-95, making it a practical stop for a night or a weekend. Farther north, The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads in Roanoke Rapids offers large pull-through, level sites, full hookups, big-rig friendly access, a dog park, a pool, and a hot tub, conveniently located off I-95 south of the Virginia border.
For a nature-first trip, Medoc Mountain State Park stands on the 325-foot remnant of a once-mighty mountain range about 30 miles northwest of Rocky Mount, where visitors picnic in an open meadow, fish on Little Fishing Creek, and traverse trails on foot, bike, or horse. Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort and Kamper's Lodge Campground round out the local options.

The Dortches area has a humid subtropical climate with hot, sticky summers and mild winters. Spring brings mild temperatures, blooming dogwoods, and good paddling flows on Little Fishing Creek. Fall delivers cooler nights, lower humidity, and leaf color through the hardwood ridges at Medoc Mountain. The most comfortable stretches for camping are typically April to May and mid September to October.
Summer is peak family season at the lakes and pools, but afternoons are hot and thunderstorms are common. Rainfall runs fairly steady year round, with August and September usually the wettest months, partly due to tropical systems tracking up the coast. Booking weekends well ahead is smart at Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort and the KOA.
Winter camping is possible but limited. The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads operates year round, while its pool is seasonal and the hot tub stays open. Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort runs on a seasonal schedule, typically late March through October. Medoc Mountain State Park camping stays open year round.
How to book campsites near Dortches
Reservation systems vary by operator. At Medoc Mountain State Park, reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be booked up to six months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks reservation portal. Holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) carry a two-night minimum on Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday, reduced to one night if booked within 14 days of arrival.
Private parks use their own systems. Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey books through the KOA website or app. The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads takes reservations directly through its website. At Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort, all sites are first-come, first-serve, maximum RV length is 38 feet, and a Thousand Trails membership is required. Kamper's Lodge Campground is bookable directly through the property.
What to expect on the ground
Most parks near Dortches are wooded, flat, and rural. Sites at the Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey include pull-throughs geared to overnighters, a fenced off-leash pet area, RV sites, and primitive cabins. Roads at Lake Gaston are older, and maneuvering larger rigs through the original sections requires patience because roads are narrow and leveling can be challenging. The lake itself is the main attraction, with a boat ramp, dock slips, and multiple fishing areas.
Medoc Mountain campsites are simple. Recent renovations added water and sewer to the electric RV sites and upgraded the bathhouse, while non-electric sites remain primitive with a shared dump station. Cell service is spotty in the park, and dark skies are a bonus. Expect biting insects in warm months, and carry a North Carolina fishing license if planning to cast on Little Fishing Creek or Lake Gaston.
