Campgrounds near East Spencer
East Spencer sits in Rowan County, North Carolina, just east of Salisbury and within a short drive of High Rock Lake, one of the state's largest reservoirs. The area falls in the Piedmont region, between Charlotte and Winston-Salem, with easy access from Interstate 85. RV travelers use it as a base for lake recreation, county park attractions, and small-town Piedmont stops.
Campground options range from full-service RV parks to lakefront marinas. Cross Winds Family Campground and Carolina Rose Campground offer full-hookup sites near the I-85 corridor. Dan Nicholas Park, operated by Rowan County, runs a wooded 70-site campground with power and water hookups next to a 10-acre park lake. Tamarac Marina and Campground and High Rock Lake Marina and Campground both provide direct water access on High Rock Lake.
Most private sites in the area accommodate larger rigs with 30/50-amp service, and several parks stay open year-round, making the region workable for shoulder-season and winter travel in addition to peak summer trips.
Things to do near East Spencer
High Rock Lake anchors most outdoor plans. The reservoir is known for bass and crappie fishing, boating, and water sports, and both Tamarac Marina and Campground and High Rock Lake Marina and Campground offer lake access with boat ramps. Pontoon rentals are common in season.
Families with kids gravitate to Dan Nicholas Park, which pairs a wooded campground with a carousel, miniature train, mini golf, gem mine, splash pad, paddle boats on Lake Murtis, a nature center, and Rowan Wildlife Adventures, a small zoo featuring native species such as black bears, bobcats, white-tailed deer, bald eagles, red foxes, and red wolves. Admission to the park itself is free, with small fees for individual attractions.
Off-water options include Salisbury's historic districts, the North Carolina Transportation Museum in nearby Spencer, and Lexington, known regionally for barbecue.

The Piedmont climate makes late spring and early fall the most comfortable windows for RV travel. April, May, September, and October combine mild temperatures, lower humidity, and generally dependable weather for hiking, lake time, and park attractions. Fall also brings hardwood color across Rowan and Davidson counties.
Summer is the peak booking season. June through August is hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the upper 80s and low 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Lakefront sites at Tamarac Marina and Campground and High Rock Lake Marina and Campground fill quickly on holiday weekends, and Dan Nicholas Park's summer attractions, including the splash pad and paddle boats, draw heavy day-use traffic.
Winter is mild by regional standards but can turn cold and wet, with occasional freezing nights and rare light snow. Several private parks, including Cross Winds Family Campground and Carolina Rose Campground, operate year-round, though seasonal amenities such as pools close outside the warm months.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

Cannot say enough good things about our experience renting from Corey. Very helpful with the renting process and what to expect. I chose the drop off option and it went very smooth - Corey gave a detailed rundown of the RV making sure I knew the basics. Everything was as described, well maintained, and just what we were looking for for our few days away. Corey was quick to respond when I had any questions and made sure everything was good. Highly recommend renting from Corey!

Booking and reservations
Most campgrounds in the East Spencer area are privately operated and take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Cross Winds Family Campground, Carolina Rose Campground, Tamarac Marina and Campground, and High Rock Lake Marina and Campground all handle bookings this way, and payment is commonly required to hold a site.
Dan Nicholas Park is run by Rowan County and uses its own reservation system for campsites and cabins. Weekend reservations require a two-night minimum, and full payment is due at the time of booking. Cabin check-in must be completed by park closing time to collect keys.
For summer weekends and holidays, book several weeks ahead, and further out for lakefront sites. Cancellation windows vary by property, so confirm each park's refund policy at the time of reservation.
What to expect on-site
Expect wooded, rolling terrain across most Rowan County campgrounds. Sites at Dan Nicholas Park are set in the woods and can be hilly, so leveling blocks are useful, and the park does not offer sewer at individual sites, though a dump station is available on-site. The county park includes a camp store, bathhouse with showers, and a camp shelter.
Private parks generally offer more infrastructure. Cross Winds Family Campground provides gravel full-hookup sites with 30/50-amp service, cable, and Wi-Fi, along with pull-through and back-in options for larger rigs. Amenities such as swimming pools, laundry, playgrounds, and fishing ponds are standard at the larger private parks.
Most properties are pet-friendly with leash rules, and quiet hours are enforced at family-oriented parks. Cell coverage is generally solid; on-site Wi-Fi varies.
