Campgrounds and RV parks near Edenton, NC

Water dominates the itinerary here. Rocky Hock Campground has a fishing pond, paddle boats, a par-3 nine-hole golf course, and boat ramp access to the Chowan River, with live music running Friday nights and the first Saturday of each month at David's New Red Barn on site. Pettigrew State Park draws paddlers and anglers to Lake Phelps, one of the largest natural lakes in the state, with hiking trails along its shore. Merchants Millpond State Park highlights include Lassiter Swamp, boat rentals, paddling trails, hiking, biking, fishing, and picnicking amid old-growth cypress draped in Spanish moss. At Cashie River Campground and RV Park, a public boat launch directly behind the campground offers easy access to the Cashie River for boating, kayaking, and canoeing. Downtown Edenton itself has a walkable historic waterfront, restaurants, and small museums.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. Temperatures are mild, bugs are manageable, and paddling on the Chowan, Cashie, and Scuppernong rivers is at its best. Merchants Millpond is a place many campers avoid in summer because of insects, and spring and fall visits tend to be more comfortable in that swamp environment. Summer is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and peak insect activity in the swamp country. It remains a popular family season, so book Rocky Hock well in advance for holiday weekends. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest storm risk in September; check forecasts before travel. Winter is the quietest season around Edenton, with occasional cold snaps but generally mild days by RV standards. Note that the campgrounds and office at Pettigrew State Park are closed for renovations through 2026, with the park open for day use while the project is ongoing, and the tent and trailer campground at Merchants Millpond State Park is closed due to construction, with the family campground closed until further notice. Confirm status directly with each park before planning a trip built around either one.

Terrain around Edenton is flat coastal plain. Sites at Rocky Hock are open and lightly shaded with grassy surrounds and pond views, and campers describe the grounds as clean, quiet, and family-run. Expect gravel pads, many pull-throughs, full hookups, picnic tables, burn rings, a par-3 golf course, paddle boats, catch-and-release fishing, and generally usable Wi-Fi. At state parks, expect basic amenities when campgrounds are open. Merchants Millpond family sites, when operating, include picnic tables and grills with a washhouse offering drinking water, restrooms, and showers, but no water or electrical hookups at individual sites. Cell service is generally usable but not universal; download maps before arrival. Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall, especially near swamps and slow-moving water. Alligators are present at Merchants Millpond, near the northern edge of their range, so keep pets leashed and give wildlife space.
