Campgrounds and RV parks near Fallston, NC

Water recreation is a defining draw. The John H. Moss Reservoir at Moss Lake Campground covers roughly 2,000 acres with about 57 miles of shoreline, supporting fishing, kayaking, and boating from multiple public ramps. A North Carolina fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. For hiking, Family - South Mountains State Park anchors the region with more than 40 miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. High Shoals Falls, an 80-foot waterfall on the Jacob Fork River, is the park's signature destination, though sections of trail have been affected by Hurricane Helene damage and travelers should confirm current status before arrival. Charlotte, Kings Mountain National Military Park, and Crowders Mountain State Park all lie within an easy day-trip radius.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Fallston. March through May brings wildflowers, moderate temperatures, and dependable trail conditions, while late October and early November deliver peak fall color in the South Mountains. Weekends during foliage season book heavily at state park campgrounds, and holiday weekends carry minimum-stay rules through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system. Summer is hot and humid, with July highs near 89 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Lakeside sites at Moss Lake are popular in this window for swimming and boating, and reservations should be made well in advance for Friday and Saturday nights. Winter is the quietest season. Moss Lake Campground remains open year-round, and South Mountains State Park stays open every day except Christmas, though gate hours shorten in December, January, and February. Cold snaps, occasional light snow, and shorter daylight hours make winter better suited to short stays and self-contained rigs.

Family - South Mountains State Park has a small footprint of RV-capable sites, with only a couple of sites offering electrical hookups and the remainder set up for tents. Sites come with tent pads, picnic tables, and fire rings, potable water is available on-site, and firewood is sold at the park. Cell reception in the park is limited to non-existent, so downloads and offline maps are recommended. Moss Lake Campground is a small, quiet, lake-side campground with restrooms, hot showers, and a mix of full-hookup RV sites and primitive tent sites. The atmosphere is oriented toward fishing and lake use rather than resort-style amenities. Across the area, expect gate hours at state parks, leash rules for pets, and no alcohol at state park sites. State park sites fill quickly and last-minute openings are rare on weekends.
