RV camping near Grandy, North Carolina
Grandy is an unincorporated community in Currituck County on the North Carolina mainland side of the Outer Banks region. It sits along US 158 between the Currituck Sound to the east and the North River to the west, which shapes most of the camping in the area: sound-side waterfront parks, wooded inland sites, and coastal properties within a short drive of the barrier-island beaches.
The town works well as an RV base because it avoids the summer congestion on Hatteras Island while keeping the Wright Memorial Bridge and the Currituck beaches within easy reach. Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Duck, and Corolla are all accessible by day trip, and mainland services (grocery, propane, fuel) stay open year-round.
Options close to Grandy include North River Campgrounds in Shawboro, Outer Banks West / Currituck Sound KOA Holiday, Bells Island Campground, Kitty Hawk RV Park, and OBX Campground in Kill Devil Hills. Together they cover the range most renters need: full-hookup pull-throughs for larger Class A and fifth-wheel rigs, back-in sites for travel trailers and Class C rentals, and simpler tent-friendly loops.
Things to do near Grandy
The main draw is water. The Currituck Sound sits directly beside the Outer Banks West / Currituck Sound KOA Holiday property, and most sound-side parks in the area offer kayak launches, crabbing spots, and shallow-water fishing for red drum, speckled trout, and striped bass.
Across the Wright Memorial Bridge, the Outer Banks beaches open up. Families typically split time between the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, Jockey's Ridge State Park in Nags Head, and the Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla. North of Corolla, four-wheel-drive tours run onto the sand to see the wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs that live on the beach.
Back on the mainland, the Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge on Knotts Island is a short drive north for birding and cycling, and Historic Corolla Park offers boardwalks and museum stops near the lighthouse.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with July and August the busiest weeks. Sites at waterfront parks like Outer Banks West / Currituck Sound KOA Holiday and Kitty Hawk RV Park book out months ahead for those weeks, and holiday weekends often carry minimum-stay requirements. Water temperatures peak in late summer, and the sound stays warm enough for swimming and paddling into September.
Shoulder seasons are the sweet spot for RV renters. April, May, September, and October bring milder days, fewer crowds, and easier reservations. Fall is generally a drier stretch on the Currituck mainland and is a popular window for anglers and long-weekend trips.
Winter is quiet. Some private campgrounds reduce services or close portions of the property from roughly December through February, and beach-town amenities operate on limited hours. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August and September; watch NHC advisories when planning late-summer trips.

How to book a campground near Grandy
Most parks near Grandy are privately operated. Outer Banks West / Currituck Sound KOA Holiday takes reservations directly through the KOA website or app, and Kitty Hawk RV Park, North River Campgrounds, Bells Island Campground, and OBX Campground book by phone or through their own websites. Some also appear on third-party platforms.
For summer holiday weekends and the July to August peak, book three to six months ahead, especially for pull-through sites that fit larger rentals or for waterfront sites. Ask about length, height, and slide-out clearance when reserving, and confirm whether the site is 30-amp, 50-amp, or both. Check cancellation windows, pet policies, and any minimum-stay rules before locking in dates.
What to expect on the ground
Grandy-area campgrounds generally offer full hookups (water, sewer, electric) with 30- and 50-amp service, laundry, and Wi-Fi of variable strength. Expect flat, sandy terrain; grass and gravel pads are typical, and many sound-side parks provide kayak or small-boat access.
Coastal weather drives most on-site logistics. Wind off the sound can be strong, so retract awnings when leaving the site, and pack for mosquitoes and biting flies in warmer months. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Currituck County.
Traffic on US 158 across the Wright Memorial Bridge backs up on summer Saturdays during the beach-house turnover. Plan grocery runs, propane fills, and dump-station stops for weekdays or early mornings.
