Campgrounds near Hays, North Carolina
Hays sits in Wilkes County in the Blue Ridge foothills of northwestern North Carolina, a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Yadkin River valley. The area works well as a base for RV travellers who want mountain scenery, trout streams, and small-town access without the crowds of Asheville or Boone. Hays is a census-designated place in Wilkes County, and nearby Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro provide the closest grocery, fuel, propane, and dump-station services.
Campground options in the surrounding area range from full-hookup private parks to state-park sites. Nearby choices include VFW Campground, Roaring River Vineyards, Sandy Creek Family Campground, Stone Mountain State Park, and Moravian Falls Family Campground and Cabin Rentals. Each fits a different trip style, from vineyard stays to family-oriented private parks to a large public park with hiking and climbing access.
Most sites are within a thirty-minute drive of Hays, so day trips to waterfalls, wineries, and the Parkway are practical from any of them.
Things to do near Hays
Stone Mountain State Park is the main outdoor draw. The park is named for a large granite dome that rises from the valley floor, and climbers scale the landmark while hikers reach the summit on the Stone Mountain Loop Trail. Rangers offer tours at the restored 19th-century Hutchinson Homestead near the base of the dome. The park has an extensive trail network, technical rock climbing with a required permit from the park office, and designated trout waters that draw anglers throughout the season.
Beyond the park, the Blue Ridge Parkway is reachable in under an hour for scenic driving and overlooks. Roaring River Vineyards and other Yadkin Valley wineries offer tastings within a short drive. W. Kerr Scott Reservoir near Wilkesboro adds paddling, mountain biking, and lake fishing to the mix.

The prime RV season runs from April through October. Spring brings comfortable days for hiking and camping, with cool mornings and gradually warming afternoons through May. Summer is warm and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, when the foothills see their wettest stretch of the year.
Fall brings the strongest weather window: cooler nights, lower humidity, and leaf color that peaks in mid to late October across the higher elevations near Stone Mountain and the Parkway. Sites fill quickly on October weekends, so early booking matters.
Winter is cold and quiet. Hays sees its coldest weather in January, with temperatures averaging a high near 43°F and a low near 28°F. Some private campgrounds close or run reduced services in winter, and mountain roads can see occasional ice or snow. Stone Mountain State Park keeps its family campground bathhouse open year-round, but expect limited facilities and cold nights during the off-season.
How to book campgrounds near Hays
Stone Mountain State Park offers RV sites with electric hookups, tent sites, group campsites, and primitive backcountry sites. Reservations for North Carolina state parks are handled through the state's official reservation portal, and any site not reserved is available on a first-come, first-served basis at the park office. For summer weekends and October leaf season, book several months out.
Private parks such as Sandy Creek Family Campground, Moravian Falls Family Campground and Cabin Rentals, VFW Campground, and Roaring River Vineyards handle reservations directly through their own phone lines or websites. Confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and pet policy at the time of booking.
What to expect
Expect mountain terrain: winding two-lane roads, some grades near the Parkway, and campground loops with tree cover that can limit satellite reception and slide-out clearance. Verify site length before booking a larger Class A or fifth-wheel.
Hookups vary widely. Stone Mountain State Park offers a mix of RV sites with electric service and non-hookup sites for tents and smaller rigs, with potable water faucets spread through the loops and a bathhouse with hot showers. Travellers should plan a dump-station stop in Wilkesboro or at a private park if needed, since state-park facilities can be limited.
Alcoholic beverages and fireworks are prohibited in the state park, and pets are generally not permitted in cabins or lodging, though service animals are exempt. Private parks in the area tend to be more pet-friendly.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hays, NC?

Pop-ups and smaller campervans often come in under $125 per night, making a cheap RV rental in Hays realistic for families on a budget. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hays%2C%20North%20CarolinaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hays, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Hays. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers, even larger Class A rigs. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform when you book, so there is no in-person paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country alongside your license. Most first-time renters in Wilkes County are surprised how quick the whole process is.

You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), giving you control over how much coverage you want for your North Carolina RV trip. Coverage helps protect you against most accidental damage during the rental, and roadside assistance is built in across all tiers. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers carefully at booking and pick the one that matches your route, especially if you plan to drive winding mountain roads near Stone Mountain State Park.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Hays is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the individual host, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book. Refund outcomes depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start, so the sooner you let RVezy know, the better your options. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or helps you rebook with travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Wilkes County RV for MerleFest or fall leaf season, knowing the cancellation terms are standardized and transparent across every listing.

Just use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see plenty of motorhomes and travel trailers in Wilkes County whose owners welcome four-legged co-pilots. Stone Mountain State Park, just 20 minutes from Hays, allows leashed pets on all 18+ miles of trails and at every family campsite, so your pup can hike to the waterfalls and granite dome with you. W. Kerr Scott Reservoir's Bandits Roost Campground is also dog-friendly. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about a fenced yard at pickup, then pack a 6-foot leash, which is required inside North Carolina state parks.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Hays?
Yes, RV delivery in Hays is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's a game-changer if you're new to towing or just want a stress-free start. Many local hosts will drive the RV straight to Stone Mountain State Park, Bandits Roost Campground at W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, or even your driveway in Hays, then level it, hook it up to power and water, and walk you through every system. Just toggle the Delivery filter when searching and enter your destination address. Pro tip: campsites at Stone Mountain don't have hookups on sites 81-90, so ask your host to fill the fresh water tank before drop-off so you're ready to camp comfortably from minute one.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-park/campingHow far can I drive on a typical RV rental from Hays?
You've got serious range from Hays, and many hosts even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer adventures. Most listings include 100 to 150 free miles per day, which easily covers a weekend at Stone Mountain State Park (about 20 miles) or Doughton Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway (about 35 miles). For bigger loops to Asheville (105 miles), Boone (40 miles), Pisgah National Forest (115 miles), or Great Smoky Mountains National Park (175 miles), filter for unlimited-mileage listings. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Hays RV trip, message the host ahead and negotiate a flat mileage package, which is almost always cheaper than paying the per-mile overage rate at the end.

For a wine-country twist, check out the Yadkin Valley vineyards south of town. ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-park/campingWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Hays, NC?
Hays has a genuinely long RV season thanks to its mild foothill climate. April through early June brings 60-80°F days, blooming dogwoods, and the famous MerleFest music festival in nearby Wilkesboro every late April. September and October are arguably the sweet spot, with crisp 50-75°F days and brilliant Blue Ridge fall color along the Parkway. Summer (July-August) is warm (mid-80s) and lively at W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, while winter dips to 25-45°F with occasional snow at higher elevations. Pro tip: book a Hays RV trip for the third week of October to catch peak leaf color at Stone Mountain's granite dome, with crowds smaller than the busier Asheville corridor.
weather.gov/gsp/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great, and first time renting an RV in Hays is honestly one of the friendliest places to start. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through propane, slide-outs, the awning, water systems, and dump procedures, plus they're a text away during your trip. The roads around Hays are mostly gentle two-lane Blue Ridge foothills with manageable grades, so you can ease into mountain driving before tackling the Parkway. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, book delivery and have the RV set up at your campsite. Pro tip: start with a campervan rental in Hays or a 20-25 foot travel trailer for the easiest learning curve, then graduate to a Class C next time.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-parkWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Hays booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. Your host is also typically just a phone call away and knows the rig inside and out, so most minor questions (like resetting a tripped GFCI or relighting the water heater) can be solved in a few minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before leaving Hays, and snap a photo of the RV's tire pressure label so you are ready for anything on a Blue Ridge backroad.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Hays, NC?
An RV road trip from Hays opens up some of the most scenic miles in the eastern U.S. Top routes include the Blue Ridge Parkway north toward Doughton Park and south toward Mount Mitchell (about 35-150 miles of overlook-after-overlook driving), a Boone and Grandfather Mountain loop (40-55 miles each way), the run to Asheville via Linville Gorge (about 105 miles south), and the Yadkin Valley wine route through Elkin and Mount Airy (Mayberry) just 25-50 miles east. Cross-state trips to Tennessee or Virginia are easy and popular. Pro tip: the Blue Ridge Parkway has length and height limits in several tunnels, so confirm your rig clearance with your host and check the National Park Service tunnel heights chart before you go.
nps.gov/blri/planyourvisit/rv-camping.htmWhat kind of fuel costs should I budget for?
Budgeting fuel for an RV rental Hays NC is straightforward once you know the numbers. Class C motorhomes typically get 8-10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs 6-9 MPG, campervans 16-20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer about 10-13 MPG. Wilkes County gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, often $2.90-$3.30 per gallon for regular unleaded. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop on the Blue Ridge Parkway, plan on $90-$130 in fuel for a midsize motorhome. Pro tip: fill up in North Wilkesboro or along US-421 before heading up to the Parkway, where gas stations are sparse and prices climb noticeably.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hays?
For the best campgrounds near Hays, NC, plan to reserve as soon as your dates are firm. Stone Mountain State Park opens reservations 6 months in advance through the NC State Parks ReserveAmerica system, and fall-color weekends in October and MerleFest week in late April sell out within hours of opening. Bandits Roost and Warrior Creek at W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, take reservations via Recreation.gov up to 6 months out and book quickly for summer holidays. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target Saturday at 7 a.m. ET, then log in right when the booking window opens for the best site selection.
ncparks.gov/recreation/campingWhat are driving conditions like around Hays, NC?
Driving around Hays is genuinely manageable, even for RV first-timers. US-421 and NC-16 are the main four-lane corridors and handle big rigs easily, while local routes to Stone Mountain (Traphill Road and John P. Frank Parkway) are paved two-lane mountain roads with gentle curves and grades that rarely exceed 8 percent. Watch for low-hanging branches on rural state roads and morning fog in the hollows. Summer thunderstorms can pop up quickly in the afternoon, and the Blue Ridge Parkway occasionally closes sections in winter for ice. Pro tip: avoid driving the Parkway after dark when deer are most active, and use lower gears descending Devil's Garden Overlook back toward Hays to save your brakes.

Stone Mountain State Park has 41 electric-hookup sites, potable water spigots throughout the loops, hot showers, flush toilets, a free dump station for registered campers, and firewood for $11 a bundle at the contact station. Pro tip: do not transport firewood into North Carolina state parks; buy it locally or use heat-treated bundles to protect the forest from invasive pests, and top off your fresh water in Hays before heading to non-hookup sites.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-park/campingWhat features come standard in RV rentals around Hays?
Most RV rentals in Hays come fully road-ready with everything you need for Blue Ridge camping. Expect a queen or full bed, plus bunk or convertible dinette sleeping, a kitchen with a propane stove, microwave, fridge, and sink, a wet or dry bathroom with a hot-water shower, roof-mounted air conditioning, propane furnace for chilly mountain nights, and a 12V house battery system. Larger Class C and Class A units include generators, slide-outs, and outdoor TVs. Every seat used for travel has a seatbelt. Wi-Fi varies, so ask the host. Pro tip: cell service drops in parts of Stone Mountain and along the Blue Ridge Parkway, so download maps offline before you leave Hays and pick a listing with a generator if you're staying at non-electric sites.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/stone-mountain-state-parkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hays hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular options include camping chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, kayaks, propane fill, linens and kitchen kits, and dump-and-clean services so you can skip the chores. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Hays, Wilkesboro, or Roaring Gap, with delivery to Stone Mountain State Park or W. Kerr Scott Reservoir often available for a flat fee. Mileage policies usually include 100-150 free miles per day, with unlimited-mileage listings available if you filter for them. Pro tip: book the dump-and-refill add-on if it's your first time renting; for $40-$75 the host handles the tanks, and you simply hand back the keys and head home.
ncparks.gov/recreation/campingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your RV rental in Hays is handled entirely through RVezy, so no cash or checks change hands with the host. You pay with a credit or debit card at booking, and a separate refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is held on your card for the duration of your trip. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it, with the agreed fuel and propane levels, the deposit is released after the trip ends. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos and a quick walkaround video at both pickup and drop-off in Hays. It takes two minutes and is the single best way to ensure a smooth deposit return.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Hays during the winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Hays is absolutely possible and can be magical, especially when light snow dusts Stone Mountain's granite dome. Hays winters are mild compared to the high country, with daytime highs typically in the 40s F and overnight lows in the 20s F. Look for listings advertised as four-season, with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and a working propane furnace, and confirm with the host that the unit is ready for cold-weather use on your dates. Many Wilkes County hosts keep RVs available year-round. Pro tip: book a campsite with electric hookups so you can run a small space heater alongside the furnace, conserve propane, and stay toasty even on the coldest Blue Ridge nights.
