Campgrounds and RV parks near James City, NC

Water is the main draw. The Neuse and Trent Rivers offer kayaking, boating, and fishing, and campers at New Bern KOA Holiday can cast from the 100-foot pier, try the catch-and-release ponds, rent a kayak, or relax by the pool. Anglers target largemouth bass, catfish, and striper in the rivers, with saltwater options a short drive downstream. Across the bridge in New Bern, families can tour Tryon Palace and its gardens, walk the historic waterfront, and visit the Birthplace of Pepsi. South of James City, the Croatan National Forest offers hiking, swimming at Flanners Beach, and paddling on Brice Creek. Atlantic Beach and Fort Macon State Park sit about an hour east for a beach day.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in coastal North Carolina. March through May brings warm days, blooming dogwoods, and comfortable nights, while September through November delivers cooler temperatures, lower humidity, and quieter campgrounds after the summer rush ends. Summer is peak season. Temperatures climb into the upper 80s and low 90s with high humidity, and thunderstorms are common in the afternoon. This is also the busiest booking period, when family travelers and beach-bound visitors compete for riverfront and full-hookup sites. Reserve well ahead for June through August, especially around July 4th and Labor Day. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August, September, and early October. Craven County has taken direct hits in past storm cycles, so RV travelers should monitor the National Hurricane Center and be prepared to relocate inland if a named storm approaches. Winter stays are mild but wetter, and some private parks reduce services or amenities off-season.

Roads into the James City area are flat and easy for larger rigs. Highway 17 and Highway 70 are the main corridors, and campground access roads are generally paved. New Bern KOA Holiday sits directly on the Neuse River off Highway 17, with over 100 RV sites, cabins, and tent spaces in a riverfront setting, plus a pool, camp store, dog park, and dump station. Expect southern-coastal conditions: humid air, mosquitoes and biting flies in warmer months, and soft ground after heavy rain. Bring bug spray, leveling blocks for softer sites, and sun protection for open riverfront pads. Cell service is generally strong near New Bern but can weaken inside the Croatan National Forest, so download maps and reservation confirmations before heading into more remote areas.
