Campgrounds near Mount Airy
Mount Airy sits in Surry County at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in north-central North Carolina, just south of the Virginia state line and a short drive from the Blue Ridge Parkway. The town is the inspiration for the fictional Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show, and its downtown, museums, and surrounding Yadkin Valley wine country give RV travelers a base camp that pairs small-town sightseeing with mountain recreation.
Private RV parks cluster along US 52 and the I-77 corridor near Fancy Gap, Virginia, just north across the state line. Mayberry Campground, Beechnut Family Campground, and Homeplace Recreational Park Inc. sit closest to downtown Mount Airy, while Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground and Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Journey are positioned near Parkway access at the top of the mountain.
Public camping is available at Pilot Mountain State Park to the south and at Doughton Park Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway to the north. Together the private and public options cover full-hookup RV stays, tent camping, and cabin rentals within about an hour of town.
Things to do near Mount Airy
Downtown Mount Airy anchors most trips. Visitors tour the Andy Griffith Museum, ride replica squad cars, and browse Main Street shops. The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History covers the Saura people, the Bunker twins, granite quarrying, and old-time music, and the historic Earle Theatre hosts a weekly bluegrass and old-time jam.
Outdoor options are close at hand. Pilot Mountain State Park rises abruptly more than 2,000 feet and offers hiking, rock climbing, a Yadkin River paddle section, and a summit drive with long views over the piedmont and Sauratown Mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a short drive west, and Doughton Park adds more than 30 miles of hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and pioneer cabins including the Brinegar and Caudill homesteads. Yadkin Valley wineries fill in the afternoons between hikes.

Peak camping season runs from late spring through mid-fall. Pilot Mountain State Park's family campground operates from March 15 through November 30, while the two paddle-in sites on the Yadkin River stay open year-round. Doughton Park Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway is typically open from May through the end of October, with exact opening and closing dates set each year by the National Park Service.
Spring brings mild days, wildflowers, and rhododendron and flame azalea bloom in the higher elevations by late spring. Summers are warm and muggy in town and noticeably cooler at Doughton Park's 3,688-foot elevation, which makes Parkway sites a popular hot-weather retreat. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August.
Fall is prime time. Leaf color moves down the ridges through October, and the annual Mayberry Days festival in late September draws large crowds and fills nearby campgrounds well in advance. Winter is cold with periodic snow, and most public campgrounds and higher-elevation Parkway facilities are closed.
How to book a campsite
Private parks around Mount Airy take direct reservations. Mayberry Campground, Beechnut Family Campground, Homeplace Recreational Park Inc., Fancy Gap Cabins and Campground, and Fancy Gap / Blue Ridge Parkway KOA Journey all book through their own websites or by phone, and some also appear on third-party listing sites. Mayberry Campground is open year-round with full hook-up sites.
Pilot Mountain State Park uses ReserveAmerica for its 42-site family campground and its Yadkin River paddle-in sites. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance, and reservations are required for the paddle-in sites. Doughton Park Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway takes reservations through Recreation.gov up to six months out for a portion of its sites, with the remainder held as first-come, first-served and paid at the on-site kiosk.
What to expect on the ground
Private parks near Mount Airy lean toward full-hookup RV sites with laundry, playgrounds, and Wi-Fi. Mayberry Campground has 106 full hook-up sites with water, sewer, 50/30-amp electric, and cable, plus two catch-and-release ponds, picnic shelters, and playgrounds, a short drive from downtown and Pilot Mountain.
Public sites are more rustic. Pilot Mountain State Park's family campground has tent pads, tables, fire rings, drinking water, and bathhouses with hot showers, but no hookups and no dump station. Some sites can accommodate RVs. Doughton Park has flush toilets, drinking water, and a dump station, but no electric hookups. Generator use is prohibited from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m., and bears are active in the area, so food and scented items must be stored in vehicles or provided lockers. GPS routing to Doughton Park is unreliable and can send RVs onto unsuitable roads, so follow the Parkway milepost signs instead.
