Campgrounds and RV parks near Mount Holly, NC

Located in Gaston County 32 miles west of Charlotte, Crowders Mountain State Park boasts two mountain peaks that offer magnificent views of the surrounding Piedmont, with trails offering challenging hikes, towering cliffs, and a Ridgeline Trail that connects to Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina. The park is a regional hub for hiking and rock climbing. Lake Norman State Park, roughly 40 miles north near Troutman, adds boating, swimming, mountain biking, and marina boat rentals on the state's largest man-made lake. Families staying at Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort have walking access to the Carowinds theme park and waterpark on the North Carolina and South Carolina border. Uptown Charlotte, the U.S. National Whitewater Center, McDowell Nature Preserve on Lake Wylie, and the Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site east of Charlotte round out the rainy-day and rest-day options.

The Piedmont has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity. April, May, October, and early November typically deliver the best mix of open trails, working lake access, and manageable heat. Summer is hot and muggy. Charlotte regularly has highs of 90 degrees or more during summer months, and the 90-degree heat can arrive as early as April or as late as October. Afternoon thunderstorms build quickly, especially between May and September. Sites at family resorts book up on summer weekends and around Carowinds operating dates, so reservations well in advance are important. Winter is cool and damp rather than harsh. Even after the most frigid nights, the days in Charlotte almost always warm up to above freezing, with just one or two days each winter not reaching above 32 degrees on average. Snow is minor and sporadic, and many private RV parks stay open year round. State park campgrounds can close for storm damage or maintenance, so travelers should check current status with North Carolina State Parks before arrival.

Private RV parks in the Mount Holly and greater Charlotte area typically offer level pull-through or back-in sites with full hookups, laundry, and pet-friendly rules. Cell service is generally strong close to the metro and can thin out toward the state parks and lake coves. Sites nearest to Interstates 85 and 485 can pick up traffic noise, which is worth checking when picking a loop. At Crowders Mountain State Park, camping is walk-in only. The park offers ten backpack camping sites approximately 1 mile from the visitor center, and all gear must be packed in by trail. Each site includes a fire ring with a grill and three picnic tables, and drinking water and vault toilets are provided. No electric hookups are available in the park.
