Campgrounds and RV parks near Nebo, NC

Lake James State Park anchors most trips. The Paddy's Creek Area has a sand swim beach, bathhouse, picnic areas, fishing access, and hiking and mountain biking trails. Canoe, kayak, and paddleboard rentals are available seasonally at the Paddy's Creek concession, and the swim beach is open during the warm months. Largemouth bass, smallmouth, and catfish fishing draws anglers spring through fall. The Linville Gorge Wilderness was designated by Congress in 1964 and covers 11,653 acres. Often called the Grand Canyon of the East, it sits north of town within Pisgah National Forest. The wilderness offers rugged hiking to Table Rock, Hawksbill, and Wiseman's View, plus rock climbing and backcountry fishing. Trails are mostly difficult, the terrain is challenging and remote, and cell service is limited. RV travelers typically day-hike from the rim and return to a developed campground for the night.

Lake James State Park is open year-round and closes only on Christmas Day. Late spring through early fall is peak season, with the Paddy's Creek swim beach and paddling concession running during the warm months. Weekend and holiday sites at the state park fill early, and reservations are strongly recommended during summer. Spring brings wildflowers along the gorge trails and steady rain, with March and April typically among the wettest months. Summers are warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common in the mountains; lake levels stay full and swimming is the main draw. Fall delivers the reliable Blue Ridge leaf season, cooler nights, and lower humidity, making October a favorite for hikers and RV travelers. Winter is mild by mountain standards but can produce ice and occasional snow, particularly at higher elevations near Linville Gorge. Some private campgrounds reduce services in winter. Linville Gorge overnight permits are required Friday and Saturday nights and holidays from May 1 through October 31, while day use permits are not required, which shifts winter backcountry use toward weekday day hikes.

Sites at Lake James State Park are drive-in or walk-in tent-focused, with picnic tables, fire rings, potable water nearby, and a central bathhouse with hot showers. Waterfront sites at Paddy's Creek and Catawba River involve a short carry from the parking area. Campground gates lock at posted times, and campers use a code from their reservation confirmation for after-hours access. The state park sites are not designed for large RVs; travelers with trailers or motorhomes should book a private campground. Cell service is limited in Linville Gorge and thins out on back roads west of Nebo, so download maps before arrival. Store food in vehicles or provided metal lockers due to bear activity. Within the wilderness, length of stay is limited to two nights and three days, and group size is capped at ten people.
