Gem mining is a signature family activity in the area. The Hiddenite area is home to Emerald Hollow Mine, an emerald mine open to the public for prospecting, where visitors can search for emeralds and dozens of other gems, including aquamarine, sapphire, garnet, amethyst, and the rare stone called hiddenite. For hiking and outdoor time, Bakers Mountain Park is located on the highest elevation point in Catawba County at 1,780 feet and features 189 acres of mature Chestnut Oak forest with nearly 4.5 miles of trails, leading to an observation platform with panoramic views of the Catawba Valley. Riverbend Park runs along the Catawba River with a network of trails through riparian areas and upland forests. The historic Bunker Hill Covered Bridge, constructed in 1895 and restored in 1994, is the only remaining example of the improved lattice-truss patented by Herman Haupt, and it is one of only two surviving original covered bridges in North Carolina.
