Camping near Ranlo, North Carolina
Ranlo sits in Gaston County in the western Charlotte metro, within a short drive of the Piedmont foothills and the North Carolina to South Carolina state line. The area gives RV travelers access to two adjacent state parks, a York County lakeside campground, and several smaller private options, all inside roughly a thirty to forty minute radius.
Crowders Mountain State Park lies in Gaston County near Gastonia and features two peaks with views of the surrounding Piedmont, plus trail connections that lead south toward Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina. That cross-border cluster is the main draw for trip planning out of Ranlo.
RV travelers will find the fullest hookup options at Allison Creek Park, which has 33 full hook-up RV campsites and 16 primitive tent sites, with paved pads equipped with water, sewer, 50/30/20 amp electric, a fire ring with grill, and a picnic table. Kings Mountain State Park adds developed campground camping just across the state line, while Fieldridge Acres and Hounds Gateway Campground round out the closer private choices.
Things to do around Ranlo
Hiking dominates the area. Crowders Mountain State Park offers miles of trails accessed primarily from Sparrow Springs, with rock faces, summit views, and a ridge route that crosses into South Carolina. Day use at the park is free, and fees apply only for camping, group climbing, certain event permits, and facility reservations.
Water recreation centers on Lake Wylie. Allison Creek Park is a 160-acre park on the shores of Lake Wylie with four boat ramps, a kayak and canoe launch, a fishing dock, several miles of trails, a playground, and picnic shelters.
At Kings Mountain State Park, families can explore forested trails, equestrian facilities, two fishing lakes with boat rentals, and the Living History Farm, a replica of a typical early 19th-century Piedmont farm, which pairs well with a visit to the neighboring Revolutionary War battlefield.

The Piedmont climate keeps campgrounds active year-round, but conditions shift meaningfully by season. Crowders Mountain State Park is open year-round and closed only on Christmas Day. Peak season is summer, when highs sit in the high 80s to low 90s and crowding can be an issue, with weekend parking often full by morning. Spring brings smaller crowds and blooming wildflowers along the trails.
Fall is a strong bet for RV trips. Kings Mountain State Park is a well-known destination for leaf color in autumn. Cooler nights and lower humidity make late September through early November comfortable for hiking and lake time, and demand at hookup sites stays steady through leaf season.
Winter is the quietest window. Freezes are common overnight, snow is rare, and the state parks remain accessible for day hikes. Burn bans may be in effect during dry stretches when wildfire risk is elevated, so check park alerts before arrival.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. This was my first time renting a RV, usually do Airbnb or hotels, but I can honestly say, this was a great experience. The host was very attentive and helpful. It was a very nice RV, comfortable, just big enough for 4 grown adults to fit nicely. Was at a 3 day rodeo event and we also had the deck set up, very nice. However I did bring my own out door rugs to cover some of the stars and strips.
