Campgrounds near Rich Square, NC
Rich Square sits in Northampton County in northeastern North Carolina, roughly halfway between I-95 at Roanoke Rapids and US-17 at Windsor. The town is small and rural, so most RV travelers use it as a quiet base for the Roanoke River lowlands, Lake Gaston, and the Historic Halifax corridor. Full-hookup sites are available within a short drive rather than in town itself.
The closest full-service RV option is The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads, located near the I-95 exit at Roanoke Rapids. South of Rich Square, Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey offers a standard KOA layout with pull-through sites. Further east along the Cashie River, Cashie River Campground and RV Park operates as a small city park in downtown Windsor with river access and a boardwalk.
Additional options within about an hour include Treeside Mobile Home and RV Park and Farm Country Campground, both near Williamston. Together these give travelers a mix of interstate-adjacent, small-town, and rural farm settings.
Things to do near Rich Square
Paddling defines the area. The Roanoke River and Cashie River wind through cypress-tupelo swamps, and the Roanoke River Partners network maintains a series of platform campsites reachable only by boat. Day paddlers commonly launch from the Roanoke-Cashie River Center in Windsor or from NC Wildlife access points along both rivers.
On land, Medoc Mountain State Park lies in Halifax County and offers picnicking, fishing on Little Fishing Creek, and trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Historic Halifax State Historic Site preserves colonial-era buildings, and the Roanoke Canal Trail runs between Roanoke Rapids and Weldon along the former canal towpath.
Lake Gaston, north of Rich Square on the Virginia line, adds boating, bass fishing, and public swim access for families traveling with kids.

Spring and fall are the practical peak seasons for this part of northeastern North Carolina. Daytime highs sit in a comfortable range, humidity is lower than midsummer, and mosquitoes along the river swamps are more manageable. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in April, and fall color along the Roanoke River generally arrives in late October and early November.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Water-based trips to Lake Gaston or the rivers remain popular, but RV renters should plan hookups with 30 or 50 amp service for air conditioning. Insect repellent is essential near the swamps.
Winter is mild by regional standards but wet, with periodic cold snaps and occasional light snow or ice. Private RV parks along I-95 typically stay open year-round, while state park and river-platform camping sees lighter use. Hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest inland-flooding risk in September.
How to book campgrounds in the area
Private parks near Rich Square each use their own booking channels. The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads, Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey, Treeside Mobile Home and RV Park, and Farm Country Campground take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Cashie River Campground and RV Park in Windsor takes all reservations through Campspot and has no on-site personnel, so check-in is handled online.
For state park camping at Medoc Mountain State Park, reservations can be made up to six months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks system on ReserveAmerica, with a two-night minimum on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends.
Roanoke River platform sites are booked separately through Roanoke River Partners and require a boat to access. Book summer holiday weekends and October foliage weekends several weeks ahead.
What to expect on arrival
Roads into Rich Square are two-lane rural highways. Rigs of most sizes reach the area without issue via US-258 or NC-561, and Carolina Crossroads offers big-rig-friendly access straight off I-95. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers, though it can thin out along river bottoms and inside Medoc Mountain State Park.
Expect basic small-town services: grocery, fuel, and hardware in Rich Square, Jackson, and Woodland, with larger supermarkets in Roanoke Rapids and Ahoskie. Cashie River Campground sits within walking distance of downtown Windsor shops and restaurants.
Wildlife is active. Deer, wild turkey, black bear in swampy areas, and abundant birdlife are common. Keep food secured, watch for ticks and chiggers on trails, and bring bug protection for evenings near still water.
