Campgrounds near Roanoke Rapids
Roanoke Rapids sits just off Interstate 95 in Halifax County, North Carolina, a few miles south of the Virginia line. The area works well as an RV base because it combines direct highway access with two significant recreation draws: Lake Gaston, a 20,000-acre hydroelectric reservoir on the Roanoke River straddling the state line, and Medoc Mountain State Park to the southwest. Bass and striper fishing, boating, and swimming define most trips here.
Campground options split into two groups. Interstate-adjacent parks such as The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads offer big-rig pull-through sites, full hookups, a pool, and quick I-95 access for travelers passing through or using Roanoke Rapids as a hub. Lakeside options, including Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort near Littleton and The Club Resort at Lake Gaston, put boat ramps and swim areas within reach of the site.
For state-park camping, Medoc Mountain State Park sits about 21 miles southwest and offers electric and non-electric sites along Little Fishing Creek. Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey provides another highway-adjacent option further south along I-95.
Things to do near Roanoke Rapids
Lake Gaston is the dominant outdoor draw. The reservoir stretches roughly 34 miles with about 350 miles of shoreline, supporting bass and striper fishing, water skiing, pontoon rentals, and swimming. Guests at Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort can launch boats on-site and use a swimming pool, mini-golf course, camp store, and swim beach.
Medoc Mountain State Park anchors the inland side of the trip. The park is built around a 325-foot ridge, a remnant of an ancient mountain range, and offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and paddling on Little Fishing Creek. Day use is free.
In town, Roanoke Rapids has the Roanoke Canal Museum and Trail, Historic Halifax State Historic Site, and the Roanoke River itself for paddling and shad fishing in spring. Families staying at The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads have on-site amenities including a pool and playground within the park.

Roanoke Rapids has a humid subtropical climate: hot, humid summers and mild winters. Comfortable travel windows fall in mid-spring and early fall, roughly April through May and mid-September through October, when highs sit in the 70s and humidity stays moderate.
Summer is peak camping season on Lake Gaston. Water temperatures warm through June, July high temperatures average near 89 degrees Fahrenheit, and July is also the wettest month, with brief afternoon thunderstorms common. Sites at private lake resorts fill fastest on summer holiday weekends, so booking early is important. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in September; storms occasionally track inland and bring heavy rain to the Roanoke River basin.
Fall brings drier air, clearer skies, and fewer bugs. Winter camping is possible: Medoc Mountain State Park stays open year-round, and interstate-adjacent parks such as The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads generally operate through the cooler months, though outdoor pools close seasonally. Snow is rare, averaging about four inches annually.
How to book campgrounds near Roanoke Rapids
Booking systems differ by operator. Medoc Mountain State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation portal on ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked up to six months in advance, and holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day) carry a two-night minimum stay.
Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort is part of the Thousand Trails network. Non-members can book stays, but specific sites are not guaranteed and are assigned on arrival. Honeywagon pump-out service is available on request for sites without sewer. The Club Resort at Lake Gaston is a members-only facility.
The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads and Enfield / Rocky Mount KOA Journey take direct reservations through their own websites or the KOA app. For summer and holiday weekends, booking six to eight weeks ahead is advised.
What to expect
Interstate-adjacent parks such as The RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads are level, big-rig friendly, and set up for one-night stopovers as well as longer stays, with paved pull-throughs and full hookups. Some road noise from I-95 is possible depending on wind and weather.
Lakeside sites tend to be more heavily wooded. At Lake Gaston RV and Camping Resort, roads are narrow with tree obstacles, so drivers of larger rigs should confirm site suitability at check-in. Sites offer 30/50-amp service with water; sewer is available on some sites and honeywagon service covers the rest.
Medoc Mountain State Park is a quieter, natural setting with a family campground of roughly 34 sites, electric hookups on some loops, hot showers, and pet-friendly rules requiring a leash no longer than six feet. Cell coverage is spottier here than at the I-95 parks.
