Campgrounds and RV parks near Rutherford College, NC

Hiking is the main draw. South Mountains State Park covers close to 20,000 acres in Burke County and sits at the crossroads of the Appalachian Mountains and the foothills, with a trail network shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Trout fishing is popular on the Jacob Fork and other park streams, and a valid North Carolina fishing license plus a trout stamp is required. Lake James State Park, about 30 minutes west near Nebo, offers a different pace. The park is built around a 6,812-acre reservoir with more than 150 miles of shoreline, and its two access areas support boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Trails range from the easy Holly Discovery Trail to segments of the Overmountain Victory Trail and the Fonta Flora State Trail. Farther afield, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Gorge, Linville Caverns, and Chimney Rock State Park are reachable as day trips.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping in this area, with mild days and cool nights. Summer is hot and humid, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in the foothills. Winter brings cold nights and occasional snow or ice, though state-park campgrounds in the region generally stay open year-round; water systems and some facilities can be limited in the coldest months. Storm damage from Hurricane Helene continues to affect park infrastructure. At South Mountains State Park, the entirety of High Shoals Falls Trail is closed and waterfall viewing areas remain closed due to continued hazards, and the Clear Creek access is closed until construction of a new entrance road and parking area is complete. At Lake James State Park, hiking and biking trails are mostly open, but Mill's Creek, East Wimba, and West Wimba trails remain closed, along with a footbridge on the southern leg of the Overmountain Victory Trail. Check the ncparks.gov status page before locking in dates, especially for trails and waterfall access.

Full hookups are the exception rather than the rule at nearby state parks. The Family Campground at South Mountains State Park has 18 sites total, with only two offering 50-amp electric and no water or sewer; the remaining 16 are non-electric tent sites, and there is no dump station. Driveways vary from about 15 to 50 feet, and the winding layout makes rigs over roughly 25 to 30 feet difficult to maneuver. Lake James is tent-only for reservable sites, with 33 drive-in sites at Paddy's Creek, 20 walk-in sites at Catawba River, and 30 paddle-in sites on Long Arm Peninsula. Cell service is unreliable throughout South Mountains, with most carriers reporting little to no signal in the campground. Plan to download maps offline and expect to be off-grid for the length of the stay. RVers who need power, sewer, and connectivity should book a private park along the I-40 corridor and treat the state parks as day-use destinations.
