Campgrounds and RV parks near Sawmills, NC

Lake Rhodhiss anchors most local recreation, with fishing, boating, and lakeside walking close to town. Visitors basing out of Indian Springs Campground or Riverside Golf and RV Park can reach public boat access, picnic areas, and disc golf within a short drive. South Mountains State Park, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the region's marquee outdoor destination, with High Shoals Falls as its most visited feature. The park has elevations up to 3,000 feet, an 80-foot waterfall, and nearly 50 miles of trail for hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers. Water recreation is offered via the Jacob Fork River, which hosts designated trout waters. Farther afield, the Wilson Creek Wild and Scenic River corridor in Pisgah National Forest offers swimming holes, waterfalls, and trout streams. Downtown Lenoir, Hickory, and Granite Falls add breweries, farmers markets, and public art for rainy-day detours.

The Sawmills area follows a humid subtropical pattern. Hickory experiences a humid subtropical climate, characterized by hot summers and cold winters; the area is fairly wet, with rainfall spread fairly evenly throughout the year, though summer often sees heavy downpours, and occasional snowfall occurs during the colder months. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with lower humidity and cooler nights. Summer brings the heaviest bookings and the most reliable lake conditions, along with afternoon thunderstorms that can build off the mountains. Fall delivers foliage color across South Mountains and the surrounding foothills, along with clearer skies, and is a popular window for weekend trips. Winter camping is possible but sites at higher elevation can see freezing overnight lows and occasional ice. South Mountains State Park opens every day except Christmas Day, year round, at 7 a.m., so the region supports year-round trips, though private RV parks along Lake Rhodhiss may reduce services in the colder months.

Terrain around Sawmills is rolling foothills, with lakefront flats along Lake Rhodhiss and steeper approach roads toward South Mountains. Cell coverage is generally solid along US 321 but drops off inside state-park boundaries, so downloading maps before arrival is wise. State-park sites at South Mountains are basic, with limited electrical hookups, so most RVers should arrive with full fresh water and empty holding tanks. Potable water is available and firewood is available for sale. Closing times vary by season: December, January, and February 7 p.m.; November 8 p.m.; March, April, and October 9 p.m.; May through September 10 p.m. Black bears are present in the surrounding national forest, so food should be stored securely. Pets are allowed at the park and at campsites but not inside buildings, and must be on an attended leash of no longer than 6 feet at all times.
