Campgrounds and RV parks near Scotland Neck, NC

Sylvan Heights Bird Park is the anchor attraction. The aviaries are grouped by continent and include the Landing Zone, where children and adults hand-feed a flock of friendly parakeets, plus wetland overlooks where wild songbirds, herons, and turtles can be spotted. Plan two to three hours; the Duck Landing Cafe sells lunch items, but bringing a cooler is also welcome. Medoc Mountain State Park lies about a half hour west near Hollister and offers picnicking, fishing on Little Fishing Creek, and trails on foot, bike, or horse, plus paddling and a family campground. Lake Gaston, a short drive north, adds boating, fishing, and public access points. Downtown Scotland Neck rounds out the day with local shops, the Rock Museum's fossil and mineral collection, and Scotland Neck Commons for a walk and playground stop with kids.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for RV travel in this part of eastern North Carolina. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the 60s into the 80s, wildflowers bloom along creek corridors at Medoc Mountain, and campground bookings are lighter than in summer. September through early November brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and fall color in the hardwood bottoms. Summer is hot and humid, with average highs near 88°F in July and lows around 71°F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Sites at KOA and RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads book up around Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day weekends. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk in August and September; monitor forecasts if traveling then. Winter camping is possible but limited. Sylvan Heights operates on shorter winter hours, and January averages a high near 48°F and a low near 33°F, so freezing nights are common. Medoc Mountain State Park remains open year round for campers who don't mind cold-weather setups.

The terrain around Scotland Neck is flat to gently rolling, with pine and hardwood stands, farm fields, and slow blackwater creeks. Roads are quiet outside of I-95, and big-rig access is straightforward at the interstate-adjacent parks. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along US-258 but can thin along rural back roads. Expect hot, humid summers with mosquitoes and the occasional tick; bring repellent, especially for trail time at Medoc Mountain. Full hookups, laundry, and clubhouses are available at the larger parks near I-95, while smaller farm-country campgrounds tend toward simpler electric and water setups.
