Camping near Southmont, North Carolina
Southmont sits on the western shore of High Rock Lake in Davidson County, roughly midway between Winston-Salem and Charlotte and a short drive off Interstate 85. High Rock Lake is the second largest lake in North Carolina behind Lake Norman, covering 15,180 acres with 365 miles of shoreline, and it anchors most camping in the area, with additional sites clustered around Salisbury and the eastern edge of Rowan County. RV travelers typically use Southmont as a base for lake recreation, Piedmont day trips, and race-week visits to Charlotte Motor Speedway.
High Rock Lake Marina and Campground is the closest full-service option, located directly on the water off Wafford Circle. Tamarac Marina and Campground and Dan Nicholas Park sit across the lake in Rowan County, while Cross Winds Family Campground and Cotton Patch RV Campground extend the search radius for travelers who prefer inland sites.
Most campgrounds in the area accept RVs with 30 and 50 amp service, and several offer full hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi. Cabin rentals are available at multiple properties for renters traveling with mixed groups.
Things to do near Southmont
High Rock Lake is the main draw, with bass fishing, pontoon cruising, and swimming along an extensive shoreline. The lake is widely considered one of the top fishing destinations in North Carolina, especially for largemouth bass, with shallow flats, submerged structure, and creek channels supporting year-round fishing. High Rock Lake Marina and Campground operates a private boat ramp, rental slips, and a camp store with bait, tackle, and licenses, which simplifies logistics for renters arriving without gear.
Dan Nicholas Park adds a strong family option. The park is home to a campground, lake, carousel, train, gem mine, aquarium and nature center, and animal habitats; admission is free, though there are fees for some attractions and fishing. Lexington, about fifteen minutes north, is known for its barbecue restaurants and the Bob Timberlake Gallery. Race fans use Southmont as a base for events at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and Uwharrie National Forest is within a short drive for hiking and off-road trails.

Spring brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and rising water temperatures on High Rock Lake. Fishing pressure picks up in March and April as bass move shallow, and weekend sites at lakeside campgrounds begin filling on Fridays. Rain is frequent through May, so RV renters should plan for occasional wet setups.
Summer is the busiest stretch. Lakefront sites at High Rock Lake Marina and Campground and Tamarac Marina and Campground fill weeks in advance around Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day. Humidity is high and afternoon thunderstorms are common, though evenings on the water stay comfortable. Reservations for holiday weekends are strongly recommended well in advance.
Fall offers the best combination of cool nights, low humidity, and open availability. Dan Nicholas Park hosts the long-running Autumn Jubilee on the first weekend of October, a festival that has drawn regional visitors for more than 40 years. Winter is the quiet season: High Rock Lake Marina and Campground is open year round, but activity drops sharply and some amenities such as the snack bar operate on a seasonal schedule.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

Corey and Ashley were wonderful. Very nice RV. Pictures don’t it justice. Obviously well taken care of. I will definitely be renting from them again.
Dave L. - Mar 2026
Cannot say enough good things about our experience renting from Corey. Very helpful with the renting process and what to expect. I chose the drop off option and it went very smooth - Corey gave a detailed rundown of the RV making sure I knew the basics. Everything was as described, well maintained, and just what we were looking for for our few days away. Corey was quick to respond when I had any questions and made sure everything was good. Highly recommend renting from Corey!

How to book campgrounds near Southmont
Reservations in the Southmont area go through several channels depending on the property. High Rock Lake Marina and Campground takes bookings directly by phone and through its website, and the park is also listed in the Good Sam and Camping Carolinas directories. Dan Nicholas Park offers online reservations, and the campground store can be reached at 704-216-7808 for camping and cabin bookings.
Privately operated parks such as Cross Winds Family Campground and Cotton Patch RV Campground typically accept online or phone reservations directly, and Tamarac Marina and Campground handles bookings through its marina office.
For summer weekends and race weeks at Charlotte Motor Speedway, book two to three months out. Off-season stays can often be arranged within a week, though renters should confirm gate hours, big-rig access, and whether hookups are winterized before arrival.
What to expect on arrival
Most Southmont-area campgrounds sit on wooded lots reached by rural two-lane roads. High Rock Lake Marina and Campground is reached from Exit 91 on I-85 by taking NC Hwy 8 South 6.5 miles, then left on Wafford Circle for 1 mile, and the operator specifically advises against using computer mapping for directions. Bring a road atlas or a downloaded route as a backup.
Sites at High Rock Lake Marina and Campground include 82 full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electric, cable TV, propane, and wireless internet, with a marina, boat ramp, and rental slips on 2,000 feet of waterfront. Dan Nicholas Park offers a 70-site campground that includes 12 sites on the 10-acre fishing lake, with access to park attractions and trails.
Expect warm, humid conditions in summer, active insect populations near the water, and quiet-hour enforcement at family-oriented parks. Leashed pets are widely accepted, but off-leash areas are limited.

visitnc.com/region/heartlandDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Southmont?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Southmont, NC. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels you'd rent through RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking flow. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. That's it. Most first-time renters are surprised how straightforward it is, leaving more energy for the fun part: picking your route along the Yadkin River.
ncdot.gov/dmv/license-id/driver-licenses/Pages/default.aspxIs my RV rental in Southmont covered if something happens?
Yes, every RV rental in Southmont booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip. While this is not traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on the way to High Rock Lake or Boone's Cave Park. If you have a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical issue, one call to RVezy support gets help dispatched. Pick the coverage tier that matches your comfort level and enjoy your Southmont RV trip worry-free.

Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a clear, standardized cancellation policy to every reservation (it is not set by the individual host), so you get consistent treatment no matter which Southmont listing you choose. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and the exact terms are confirmed at checkout. If your plans change, open your trip in your RVezy dashboard and follow the cancellation prompts, or contact RVezy support for help. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy will help you rebook or issue a refund or travel credit so your North Carolina trip still happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Southmont?
Absolutely. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Southmont, and you can find them in seconds by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Southmont sits right on High Rock Lake, and your pup will love sniffing around the shoreline or stretching out at Boone's Cave Park in nearby Churchland, where leashed dogs are welcome on the river trails. Lake Norman State Park, about an hour west, also allows leashed pets on trails and campsites (but not at the swim beach). Tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees and cleaning rules, and ask for their favorite dog-friendly spots along the Yadkin River.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-norman-state-parkCan the RV be delivered right to my campsite in Southmont?
Yes, RV delivery Southmont service is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer directly to your campsite at Tamarac Marina Resort on High Rock Lake, to a private property, or even to nearby spots like Cross Winds Family Campground on Badin Lake. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location and are clearly listed on each listing. Use the Delivery filter to see only hosts offering this service, it's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping Southmont without ever towing a thing.

Many hosts include 100 to 150 miles per day with reasonable overage rates, typically around $0.30 to $0.50 per extra mile. Tip: review the mileage section on each listing before booking, and if you are planning a longer loop, message the host to ask about a higher cap or a flat package: many will say yes.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southmont%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhere can I stay in my RV near Southmont?

Cross Winds Family Campground on Badin Lake (about 30 minutes south) has lakefront RV sites with hookups and a swim beach. Lake Norman State Park near Troutman (about an hour west) offers electric and water RV sites plus a dump station. Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury, about 25 minutes away, is great for families with a small zoo, paddle boats, and shaded campsites. ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-norman-state-park/campingWhen is the best time to plan a Southmont RV trip?
The sweet spot for RV camping Southmont is April through early June and again from mid-September through early November, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 65 to 80 degree Fahrenheit range and humidity drops. Summers (June through August) are warm and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s, perfect for jumping into High Rock Lake but a workout for RV air conditioners. Winters are mild with highs in the 50s and occasional cold snaps, making December to February a quiet, budget-friendly time to rent. Pro tip: book a fall trip to catch the Piedmont's hardwood color along the Yadkin River in mid to late October, it's a local secret most out-of-staters miss.
weather.gov/rah/climateI've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Southmont?
You've got this. First time renting an RV in Southmont is actually a great place to start because the local roads, NC-8, US-52, and the country lanes around High Rock Lake, are wide, low-traffic, and easy to navigate compared to big-city driving. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, and emergency systems, and you can text or call them anytime during your trip. If you'd rather skip driving entirely, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: take 15 minutes after pickup to practice in an empty parking lot, the Lexington Walmart lot off US-64 is a favorite spot for new RVers getting their bearings.
ncdot.gov/initiatives-policies/safety/safe-driving/Pages/default.aspxWhat happens if I have a breakdown during my Southmont RV trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Southmont booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are parked at High Rock Lake, cruising up I-85, or exploring the back roads near Denton. Roadside assistance handles common issues like flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also just a message away for quick questions about the specific RV. Tip: save the RVezy support number in your phone before you leave, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup: it makes any service call go faster.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Southmont RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Southmont across state lines is totally doable and incredibly popular. You're perfectly placed for runs into Virginia (Blue Ridge Parkway and Shenandoah, about 3 hours north), South Carolina beaches like Myrtle Beach (about 3.5 hours southeast), Tennessee's Smokies (about 4 hours west), and Georgia (Atlanta is roughly 4.5 hours southwest). Travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host's insurance, so message them directly before booking if that's your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: hosts who advertise long-distance trips often have higher mileage caps already built in, look for that note in the listing description.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a Southmont RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable on any North Carolina RV trip, but it's easy to plan for. North Carolina gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, often around $2.90 to $3.30 per gallon for regular and $3.30 to $3.70 for diesel in the Southmont area. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes about 10 to 14 MPG, Class A around 7 to 10 MPG, and tow setups depend on your truck. A 200-mile weekend loop around High Rock Lake and the Uwharrie National Forest in a Class C usually runs $60 to $90 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Sheetz or Murphy USA off I-85 in Lexington, prices are usually the lowest in the county.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Southmont?
For the smoothest Southmont RV trip, book popular campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead, especially for summer weekends and any date near Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, or Labor Day. Lake Norman State Park uses ReserveAmerica and opens reservations 6 months in advance, sites go fast. Private parks like Tamarac on High Rock Lake and Cross Winds on Badin Lake book directly through their websites and can fill up quickly for fall color weekends in October. Midweek and shoulder-season stays are often available with just a few days' notice. Pro tip: if a weekend looks full, check Friday-only or Sunday-night arrivals, those single nights are often the last to book and let you piece together a stay.
northcarolinastateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/lake-norman-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NC&parkId=552853What are the driving conditions like around Southmont?
Driving conditions around Southmont are some of the easiest in the Carolinas for an RV. The local network of NC-8, US-64, and US-52 is flat to gently rolling, with wide shoulders and light traffic outside of Lexington and Salisbury rush hours. I-85 runs just to the north and is your main artery to Charlotte (50 miles southwest) and Greensboro (45 miles northeast). Summer afternoons can bring quick thunderstorms, so pull off if rain gets heavy. Winter occasionally brings ice on bridges, watch the NC-8 crossings over coves of High Rock Lake on cold mornings. Pro tip: avoid the US-52 corridor through Lexington at lunchtime on weekends, the famous BBQ joints create unexpected traffic right around noon.
drivenc.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Southmont?
Most campgrounds near Southmont are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Tamarac Marina on High Rock Lake offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), a dump station, boat slips, and Wi-Fi. Cross Winds Family Campground on Badin Lake has full hookups, a swim beach, and a camp store. Lake Norman State Park has 11 sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups plus a bathhouse with hot showers and a $35 dump station fee for non-campers. Potable water fill-ups are available at most sites and at Boone's Cave Park. Pro tip: many High Rock Lake parks offer on-site pump-out service for a small fee, so you don't have to break camp just to empty tanks mid-stay.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/lake-norman-state-park/campingWhat's actually inside the RVs available for rent in Southmont?
You'll be impressed by how comfortable a motorhome rental in Southmont can be. Most rentals come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, additional sleeping for 4 to 8 people (convertible dinettes and bunks), a full kitchen with a fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a bathroom with a shower and toilet. Air conditioning, furnace heat, and a TV are standard, and many units include a generator, outdoor speakers, or a Wi-Fi hotspot. Larger Class A and Class C units offer seatbelted seating for the whole family. Tip: when browsing RVezy, check each listing's amenity list for must-haves like a generator (helpful if you are boondocking near the Uwharrie National Forest) or a backup camera if you are newer to driving.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southmont%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for a campervan rental Southmont?
Campervan rental Southmont hosts offer a great menu of add-ons to make your trip easier. Common options include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor tables ($15 to $30), generators or solar setups, bike racks, kayaks, propane fills, and pet kits. Many hosts in the Lexington, Salisbury, and Winston-Salem area also offer delivery and setup for a per-mile fee plus a flat setup charge. Pickup is usually self-service at the host's address with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Mileage policies range from 100 miles per day to unlimited, all spelled out clearly on the listing. Pro tip: bundling delivery, linens, and a starter kit often costs less than the individual add-ons, just ask the host for a bundled quote.
visitnc.com/things-to-do/outdoorsHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host, so your transaction is protected from start to finish. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment before the trip starts. Typical deposits in the Southmont area range from about $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, and the exact amount is shown clearly during checkout. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition and within the agreed mileage and generator hours, the deposit is released after the trip. Tip: take date-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off: it is the easiest way to protect your deposit and breeze through the return inspection.
