Campgrounds near Sparta, North Carolina
Sparta sits in Alleghany County in North Carolina's High Country, near the Blue Ridge Parkway and the New River. The town serves as a practical staging point for RV travelers headed to national park, state park, and private campgrounds within a short drive. Elevations in the surrounding area range from roughly 2,500 feet in the river valleys to over 3,600 feet along the Parkway ridgeline, which keeps summer nights cool and shortens the shoulder seasons.
RV travelers have a mix of options. Doughton Park Campground - Blue Ridge Parkway National Park offers first-come and reservable sites at a high elevation with a dump station and flush toilets but no hookups. Stone Mountain State Park provides electric and non-electric sites within a family campground open year-round. New River Canoe and Campground, Sandy Creek Family Campground, and Deer Creek Motorcoach Resort HOA Galax VA cover the private-park spectrum from riverside tent-and-RV sites to full-hookup motorcoach lots.
Most destinations here are within a 30 to 45 minute drive of downtown Sparta.
Things to do near Sparta
The New River is the area's headline attraction. It is a designated National Wild and Scenic River with gentle water suited to beginner paddlers, tubers, and kayakers, and it holds bass, muskellunge, and rainbow and brown trout. Local outfitters run shuttle-supported float trips and rent canoes, kayaks, and tubes.
Stone Mountain State Park is built around a 600-foot granite dome that draws hikers and permitted rock climbers, with more than 18 miles of trails and over 20 miles of designated trout waters. The Stone Mountain Loop Trail reaches the summit and passes the restored 19th-century Hutchinson Homestead.
Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Doughton Park covers 7,000 acres of ridgetop meadows and steep slopes with more than 30 miles of hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and access to backcountry sites in Basin Cove.

Season windows differ sharply by campground type. Doughton Park Campground - Blue Ridge Parkway National Park is seasonal, typically open from mid-May through late October, with exact opening and closing dates set each year by the National Park Service. Sections of the Parkway near Doughton have been affected by paving projects and storm-related closures, so route status should be checked before towing.
Stone Mountain State Park is open year-round except Christmas Day, with park gate hours that shrink in winter. Nearby private parks generally operate spring through fall, and a few remain open all year, so it is worth confirming dates directly with the operator.
Summer weekends are the busiest window across all site types. Fall brings peak leaf color along the ridgeline through mid to late October, and spring produces flame azalea and rhododendron blooms at higher elevations.
Winter camping is limited to a handful of lower-elevation parks that stay open.
How to book campgrounds near Sparta
Reservation systems vary by property. Doughton Park Campground - Blue Ridge Parkway National Park bookings go through Recreation.gov or 1-877-444-6777, with a window that opens up to six months in advance. A portion of the sites is held for first-come, first-served walk-ups and must be booked in person at the campground kiosk.
Stone Mountain State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica, which allows online or phone bookings up to six months ahead. Holiday weekends carry a two-night minimum, and any site not reserved is available first-come, first-served.
Private campgrounds such as New River Canoe and Campground, Sandy Creek Family Campground, and Deer Creek Motorcoach Resort HOA Galax VA book directly through the operator. Summer weekends and October leaf-peeping dates fill earliest and should be locked in well ahead.
What to expect on the ground
Hookups are limited on public land. Doughton Park has no electric or water hookups at individual sites, though a dump station, potable water, and flush toilets are available, and there are no showers. Stone Mountain State Park offers a mix of electric and non-electric sites with a bathhouse, hot showers, and a dump station.
GPS routing to Doughton Park has a documented problem of directing RVs and trailers onto steep grades and gravel country roads. The recommended approach from I-77 is via US-21 through Roaring Gap to the Parkway, not the shortest map route.
Bears are active throughout the area, so food, trash, and scented items should be stored in a vehicle or in provided lockers. Firewood brought onto the Parkway must be heat-treated and bear a USDA or state certification seal, or be gathered locally, to prevent the spread of tree-killing pests.

RVezy rentals are covered for travel within the United States and Canada (confirm with your host before crossing into Canada, since some listings allow it and some do not), but travel into Mexico is not permitted due to insurance coverage limits. Pro tip: for most renters, the Virginia Highlands and Mount Rogers area is the favorite cross-border add-on.

North Carolina gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average, and you will find pumps in Sparta along US-21 and at the BP and Marathon stations on Main Street. For a 300-mile round trip exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway and Stone Mountain, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sparta?
Sooner is smarter, especially for peak weekends. Stone Mountain State Park Campground reservations open six months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks system, and fall foliage weekends in October can sell out quickly. Doughton Park Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway takes reservations through Recreation.gov up to six months ahead for reservable loops, with some first-come, first-served sites available midweek. Private parks like A and C Campground and New River Campground are easier to grab, often two to four weeks out. Pro tip: if you are booking your RV rental in Sparta for late September around the Mountain Heritage Festival or for peak leaf season around mid-October, lock in your campsite the day reservations open at 10 a.m. Eastern.
recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/234077What is driving an RV around Sparta actually like?
Easier than you might think, with a couple of smart heads-ups. US-21 through downtown Sparta is a wide, well-maintained highway, and the Blue Ridge Parkway has a 45 mph speed limit with gentle grades and frequent pull-offs, ideal for relaxed RV driving. Side roads into hollers can be narrow and winding, so stick to numbered highways with bigger rigs. Watch for low-clearance tunnels south on the Parkway near Asheville (the closest near Sparta is well above 12 feet), morning fog above 3,000 feet, and the occasional deer at dusk. Winter ice closes sections of the Parkway from December through March. Pro tip: download offline maps before leaving town, since cell coverage drops in parts of Doughton Park and along the New River.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds around Sparta?
You will find a great mix, from full-service resorts to rustic Parkway gems. A and C Campground and New River Campground offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi at most sites. Stone Mountain State Park provides electric and water at each site plus a centralized dump station and bathhouses with hot showers. Doughton Park Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway is more rustic with no hookups but does have a dump station and potable water fill. New River State Park sites offer water and electric. Pro tip: for the best campgrounds near Sparta NC with full amenities, choose A and C or New River Campground, then make a day trip up to Doughton Park's overlooks without unhooking.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/new-river-state-parkWhat features will my Sparta rental RV have inside?
Modern comforts, mountain-ready. Most RVs on RVezy in the Sparta area come fully equipped with queen or king beds, a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both AC and propane furnace (a real plus for cool Blue Ridge nights that can dip into the 40s even in summer), and proper seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, outdoor speakers, and a generator for boondocking at Doughton Park where there are no hookups. Class C and Class A models sleep four to eight people comfortably for a family RV trip Sparta loves. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and look for listings with a generator if you want to camp Parkway-side without electric hookups.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sparta%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental Sparta NC trip on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, which keeps everything traceable and protected. A refundable security deposit is held separately during your trip to cover potential issues like excessive cleaning or damage beyond the protection plan, and the amount is shown clearly on each listing before you confirm. As long as you return the RV on time, in similar condition, with the tanks handled per the host's instructions, your deposit is released after the trip. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround of the RV at pickup and drop-off, share it in the RVezy message thread, and you will sail through deposit return with zero stress.
