Camping near Spencer, North Carolina
Spencer sits in Rowan County in the North Carolina Piedmont, just north of Salisbury and roughly halfway between Charlotte and Greensboro along Interstate 85. The town is best known as the home of the N.C. Transportation Museum, located at the former Southern Railway Spencer Shops, a 60-acre site once serving as a major steam locomotive repair facility between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. For RV travelers, the location is practical: interstate access is easy, grocery and fuel stops are close, and campgrounds sit within a short drive of both the museum and High Rock Lake.
Options range from county-park camping to private RV resorts. Dan Nicholas Park is home to a campground, lake, carousel, train, gem mine, aquarium and nature center, animal habitats, and more, making it a strong pick for families. Private parks in the area include Cross Winds Family Campground near Linwood, Carolina Rose Campground south of Salisbury, Tamarac Marina and Campground on High Rock Lake, and Forest Lake RV and Camping Resort to the north.
Most sites in the area are wooded or lakeside, with a mix of pull-throughs and back-ins. Rigs of nearly any size can be accommodated at the larger private parks, while county-run sites tend to favor smaller trailers and tents.
Things to do around Spencer
The N.C. Transportation Museum highlights railroading, automotive, and aviation history at the former Spencer Shops, with seasonal train rides, hands-on exhibits, special events, and a gift shop. Annual events include Day Out With Thomas, the Polar Express, Fire Truck Show, Automobile shows, the Harvest Festival, and the Easter Bunny Express. Downtown Salisbury, ten minutes south, has historic districts, breweries, and restaurants that work well for a rest day off the road.
Outdoor time centers on water and woods. High Rock Lake, reached from Tamarac Marina and Campground, is a large reservoir popular for bass fishing and boating. Lake Murtis is a 10-acre lake in Dan Nicholas Park; while fishing is permitted, no boats except the park's paddle boats are allowed in the lake. The park also has a nature center, gem mine, carousel, and short trails suited to younger kids. Morrow Mountain State Park and the Uwharrie National Forest sit within about an hour for longer hikes.

Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, but also the fullest calendar of museum events and lake activity. Winter is cool rather than harsh, with occasional light snow; several private parks continue to take rigs through the off-season, and Polar Express weekends in late fall pull heavy demand at nearby campgrounds.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

Cannot say enough good things about our experience renting from Corey. Very helpful with the renting process and what to expect. I chose the drop off option and it went very smooth - Corey gave a detailed rundown of the RV making sure I knew the basics. Everything was as described, well maintained, and just what we were looking for for our few days away. Corey was quick to respond when I had any questions and made sure everything was good. Highly recommend renting from Corey!

Booking and reservation tips
Reservation systems vary by operator. Dan Nicholas Park has a two-night minimum for reservations on weekends, and payment in full must be made to hold reservations. The campground store handles camping and cabin bookings by phone at 704-216-7808. There are no sewer hookups on sites, and the park allows one travel trailer, one RV, or two tents per site, so plan for a dump-station stop.
Private parks generally book online. Cross Winds Family Campground operates year-round and accommodates RVs up to 90 feet with full hookups including electric, water, sewer, cable TV, and WiFi, with reservations through Campspot or the park website. Book six to eight weeks ahead for holiday weekends, spring museum events, and Polar Express season in late fall.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Spencer tend to be wooded, level, and quiet. Loop B at Cross Winds provides shaded, back-in sites that feel more private, while the main area has level gravel pull-through sites in open terrain. All sites and cabins at Dan Nicholas Park are in the woods, and the 70-site campground includes 12 sites on the 10-acre fishing lake.
Expect full hookups at the larger private parks and electric-and-water at Dan Nicholas plus some primitive sites with no hookups. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally usable across Rowan County, though signal varies by campground and carrier. Families should budget time for the nature center, playgrounds, and paddle boats at Dan Nicholas, plus at least a half-day for the Transportation Museum. Pets are welcome at most parks with the usual leash rules.
