RV camping near Springdale, North Carolina
Springdale sits in Gaston County in the western Piedmont, roughly a half-hour drive west of Charlotte and minutes from the North Carolina and South Carolina border. RV travelers use it as a base for two adjoining park systems: Crowders Mountain State Park on the North Carolina side and Kings Mountain State Park across the state line in South Carolina. The park has connecting trails to the adjoining Kings Mountain National Military Park and Crowders Mountain State Park, giving campers a large recreation footprint from one home base.
Options in the immediate area range from developed lake and state-park campgrounds to smaller private sites. Kings Mountain State Park and Allison Creek Park offer water and electric or full-hookup sites suited to trailers and motorhomes. Crowders Mountain State Park is primitive backpack camping, with a one-mile hike to campsites and no bathhouse facilities, so RVs typically park at nearby private grounds instead.
For rigs, the useful mix nearby includes Fieldridge Acres, Hounds Gateway Campground, Kings Mountain State Park, and Allison Creek Park, with Crowders Mountain State Park adding day-use hiking and climbing within easy driving distance.
Things to do around Springdale
Hiking is the headline activity. Crowders Mountain State Park has two mountain peaks with views over the Piedmont, and its Ridgeline Trail crosses into South Carolina to link with Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park. The cliffs are a popular destination for rock climbers.
On the South Carolina side, Kings Mountain State Park offers over 20 miles of hiking trails and 30 miles of equestrian trails complete with an equestrian campground, plus two fishing lakes at Lake York and Lake Crawford. Families often visit the Living History Farm, which represents a typical early 19th-century Piedmont farm and includes a barn, cotton gin, blacksmith, and carpenter shop.
Water recreation centers on Lake Wylie. Allison Creek Park is a 160-acre park located on the shores of Lake Wylie with 4 boat ramps, a kayak/canoe launch, a fishing dock, 3 miles of trails, a playground, and picnic shelters.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV trips in this part of the Piedmont. Spring brings blooming wildflowers along the trails and generally lighter crowds than the peak months. Fall brings cooler air and color: the park is an excellent place to come see the leaf changes in the fall.
Summer is peak season and also the hottest, most humid stretch, with afternoon highs typically in the high 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit. Crowding can be an issue at trailhead parking on weekends, and campsites at the state parks often book well in advance. Holiday weekends carry a 2-night minimum stay at NC state parks for Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day.
Winter is quieter but usable. Crowders Mountain State Park is open year-round. Allison Creek Park is also open year-round. Rain is spread across the year, with occasional cold snaps and, less often, a light snow or ice event that can affect trails and secondary roads.

This was my first time renting a RV, usually do Airbnb or hotels, but I can honestly say, this was a great experience. The host was very attentive and helpful. It was a very nice RV, comfortable, just big enough for 4 grown adults to fit nicely. Was at a 3 day rodeo event and we also had the deck set up, very nice. However I did bring my own out door rugs to cover some of the stars and strips.

The RV and host were both amazing. It was the most seem less, enjoyable RV experience we have had. The bed was so comfortable my wife said it was hard to leave such great nights of sleep...

Kirby was amazing - friendly, responsive and helpful from start to finish. And his RV was a delight to drive and comfortable for 3 adults and 2 children to enjoy for an entire week

How to book campgrounds near Springdale
North Carolina state park sites use the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. Note that Crowders Mountain offers primitive backpack camping with a one-mile hike to campsites and no bathhouse facilities, and no electric is permitted in the park, so it is not suitable for RVs.
South Carolina state parks use a separate reservation system. Reservations must be made for a minimum of two nights and can be made from the same day to 13 months in advance. Kings Mountain State Park allows a maximum 14-night consecutive stay, and campers must leave the park for 7 days after reaching the maximum stay before returning.
County and private grounds have their own systems. Allison Creek Park is open year-round, camping reservations can be made 13 months in advance, and the maximum length of stay is 14 nights. Fieldridge Acres and Hounds Gateway Campground take bookings directly through their own channels.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely in service level. At Kings Mountain State Park, each site is packed gravel and includes individual water and electrical hookups, several sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and the campground is convenient to restroom facilities with hot showers. Allison Creek Park has 33 full-hookup sites equipped with 30/50-amp electric service, accommodating various RV sizes, plus 16 primitive tent sites.
Expect a wooded, hilly Piedmont setting rather than open plains. Roads inside state parks can be narrow and curvy; drivers with big rigs or hauling a trailer may want to take the roads around the park at a slower pace, as some of them can be quite curvy.
Rules to plan for: leashed pets are generally allowed in campgrounds, alcohol is prohibited except by Special Activity Permit at NC state parks, and at Crowders Mountain, firewood is provided at the campground and purchased at the Visitor Center at check-in, sold in a locker system.
