RV camping near Star, North Carolina
Star sits in Montgomery County in the central Piedmont, roughly between Asheboro and the Uwharrie National Forest. The surrounding region is rural, wooded, and shaped by the low, rolling Uwharrie Mountains, giving RV travelers access to lakes, hiking trails, and family attractions without long highway drives.
Most campgrounds in the area cluster north around Asheboro and west toward Lake Tillery. Private parks such as Zooland Family Campground, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Asheboro, and Holly Bluff Family Campground cater to families with pools, playgrounds, and organized activities. Morrow Mountain State Park sits in Stanly County about 50 miles northeast of Charlotte, offering a more traditional wooded state-park experience with electric and non-electric sites.
The North Carolina Zoo, Seagrove pottery district, Uwharrie National Forest, and Lake Tillery are the main draws. Interstate access via I-73 and I-74 keeps Greensboro, High Point, and Charlotte within about a one-hour drive.
Things to do near Star
The North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro is the region's headline attraction and is within a short drive of Zooland Family Campground and both Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort locations. Families staying at these parks can pair a zoo day with on-site amenities such as pools, jumping pillows, gem mining, and themed weekend activities.
Outdoor recreation centers on the Uwharrie National Forest and Morrow Mountain State Park, where recreation is plentiful around Lake Tillery and the Yadkin/Pee Dee River, with fishing and boating popular pastimes and miles of trails to travel on foot or horseback. The Seagrove pottery corridor, Pisgah Covered Bridge, and the North Carolina Aviation Museum round out low-key day trips suitable for mixed-age groups.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Star area. March through May brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and generally lower humidity, while September through November delivers cool nights, changing hardwood color across the Uwharries, and fewer bugs. Both shoulder seasons see moderate weekend demand, and holiday weekends can fill state-park sites months out.
Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Private family campgrounds run their full activity schedules, splash features, and themed events during this window, making it the busiest time despite the heat. Reserve early for July 4th and Labor Day weekends.
Winter is short but can bring hard freezes, occasional snow or ice, and reduced services. Some private campgrounds limit amenities or close pools and activity buildings, while Morrow Mountain State Park is open year round for camping, subject to ongoing facility work.
How to book campgrounds near Star
For Morrow Mountain State Park, reservations are handled through the North Carolina State Parks system. Sites can be booked online at ncparks.gov/reservations or by calling 1-877-722-6762. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance. A 2-night minimum stay applies on the Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day holiday weekends.
Private parks including Zooland Family Campground, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Asheboro, and Holly Bluff Family Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or booking platforms. Themed weekends at Jellystone parks and NC Zoo events drive early sell-outs, so lock in dates well ahead for spring and summer visits.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Star is rolling Piedmont with wooded lots, red-clay soils, and a mix of paved and gravel campground roads. Morrow Mountain's loops include some sloped sites where leveling blocks are useful, and RV-friendly loops sit closest to the main park road. Private parks near Asheboro generally offer flatter, more open sites suited to larger rigs.
Cell coverage is uneven in the Uwharrie foothills, and Wi-Fi at rural campgrounds can be limited during busy weekends. Firewood is available for purchase from the campground host or ranger, and campers may also bring firewood or gather what is dead and on the ground, but cutting live or standing dead trees is not permitted. Plan for insects in warm months and expect quiet, small-town services in Star itself, with fuel, groceries, and dump stations concentrated in Asheboro and Troy.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Star, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Star, NC?
RV rental in Star, NC is one of the most affordable ways to explore central North Carolina's Uwharrie region. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $300 per night, and larger Class A rigs can reach $300 or more. Because Star sits in a quieter pocket of Montgomery County, you'll often find better midweek rates than near Charlotte or Raleigh. For a cheap RV rental in Star, book a smaller travel trailer with delivery to Arrowhead Campground and split costs with friends. Pro tip: weekday pickups and shoulder-season dates in March or October stretch your budget the furthest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Star%2C%20North%20CarolinaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Star, NC?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Star, NC. North Carolina does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal RV use, even for larger Class A motorhomes. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and your ID is verified right in the platform during booking, so there's no extra trip to a DMV. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters in the Uwharrie area are surprised at how easy the paperwork really is.

This is perfect for first-time renters or anyone who'd rather skip towing a fifth wheel down NC-109. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service. The closest larger service hubs are Asheboro (about 20 miles) and Albemarle (about 25 miles).
