Campgrounds and RV parks near Troy, NC

The Uwharrie National Forest is the primary draw. Between the Wood Run Mountain Bike Trail system and the Badin Lake Recreation Area trails, there are more than 60 miles of trails for mountain biking in and around the Uwharries, and the Badin Lake OHV Trail Complex currently has 9 trails for approximately 17 miles of riding, marked with orange diamond markers for two-way traffic. The forest also supports horse camps and dozens of miles of bridle trails. Water recreation centers on Lake Tillery and Badin Lake. Morrow Mountain State Park provides hiking, swimming in the park pool, and fishing and boating on Lake Tillery. There are over 15 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to challenging, and a moderate summit trail climbs Morrow Mountain for panoramic views. Families staying at Zooland Family Campground or Holly Bluff Family Campground can pair camping with a visit to the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in the Uwharries. Daytime highs run in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit through much of spring and fall, with cool nights. May is the month with the most rainfall in Troy, when rain falls for 16 days and typically aggregates up to about 77 mm of precipitation, while October is the month with the least rainfall, with rain falling for about 8.9 days and accumulating around 47 mm of precipitation, generally lining up with reliable fall foliage across the hardwood-dominated forest. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures reach their average annual highs in July, around the low 90s Fahrenheit with lows near 70, and humidity stays high. This is peak booking season for lake-access sites and state park loops, so reserving well ahead is important. The Norwood Campground swimming pool is open daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and other private campgrounds follow a similar warm-season schedule for pool and event amenities. Winters are short and cool rather than harsh, with daytime highs generally in the 50s and overnight lows near freezing. Norwood Campground is open year-round with unlimited access to Lake Tillery, though the pool is only open Memorial Day to Labor Day, and Badin Lake Campground in the national forest offers a year-round retreat for swimmers, boaters, and anglers. The Uwharrie National Forest also conducts prescribed burns that can cause smoky conditions in and around recreation facilities.

Expect a wooded Piedmont setting with mixed hardwood and pine cover, rolling terrain, and sites that vary in levelness. Morrow Mountain State Park spreads across loops within rolling Piedmont terrain, and family sites include picnic tables, grills, and tent pads, with some sites providing electric hookups for RVs. Some sites present leveling challenges, and reviewers occasionally recommend scouting before setup. Hookups vary widely. In the national forest, only a portion of sites offer electric, and dispersed camping is fully primitive with no toilets, no hookups, and no drive-up access. Reaching some dispersed sites benefits from high-clearance or 4WD. At Norwood, amenities include restrooms and showers, laundry facilities, a dump station and recycling center, and WiFi, and private parks like Zooland and Holly Bluff offer similar hookups and family amenities. Pets are allowed at the state park and at campsites on an attended leash of no longer than 6 feet, and most private parks accept leashed pets as well.
