Camping near Tyro, North Carolina
Tyro is an unincorporated community in Davidson County, in the central North Carolina Piedmont between Winston-Salem and Salisbury. The area sits near High Rock Lake, a reservoir on the Yadkin River with about 365 miles of shoreline, which anchors most of the local RV camping. Interstate 85 runs a short drive south, making the region an easy stop for travelers moving between Charlotte, Greensboro, and the Triad.
Campground options nearby cover a wide range. Forest Lake RV and Camping Resort sits on 306 acres of forests, fields, and rolling hills along the banks of the Yadkin River in Advance, part of the Thousand Trails network. Cross Winds Family Campground and Carolina Rose Campground offer smaller, family-oriented settings in the surrounding Piedmont countryside. High Rock Lake Marina and Campground provides direct water access with full-hookup RV sites, 30/50 amp electric, pull-throughs, a boat ramp, and cabin and boat rentals.
For families who want attractions on-site, Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury is a 425-acre county park with a 10-acre fishing lake, a nature center, a carousel, gem mining, miniature golf, paddle boats, and a wooded campground of about 70 sites.
Things to do around Tyro
Water recreation is the main draw. High Rock Lake supports strong bass and crappie fishing, boating, and swimming, and High Rock Lake Marina and Campground offers a marina, boat ramp, rental slips, swimming pool, and a snack bar in season. Guests can launch a personal boat or rent one on-site.
Inland options are strong for families. Dan Nicholas Park includes an aquarium, barnyard, carousel, gem mine, miniature golf course, nature center, paddle boats, train station, splash pad, and wildlife adventures, with park admission free and small fees for individual attractions. Forest Lake RV and Camping Resort adds miles of trails for hiking, biking, horseback riding, and golf carting, catch-and-release fishing, two pools, and a beach for swimming.
Off-site, downtown Lexington hosts the Lexington Barbecue Festival each October, and Salisbury offers a historic downtown and the North Carolina Transportation Museum a short drive away.

The Piedmont climate produces four usable camping seasons that vary sharply. Spring runs mild and green, with average April highs in the upper 60s and lows around 50°F. Rain is spread across the season, so RVers should expect occasional showers and soft ground at lakeside sites. Wildflowers and lake fishing pick up quickly through March and April.
Summer is warm and humid. July peaks with average highs near 90°F and lows around 68°F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. This is peak season at private resorts and the county campground, and holiday weekends fill early. Dan Nicholas Park keeps extended summer gate hours from about 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. in June, July, and August.
Fall brings the most stable weather. October is typically among the drier months, and the region draws crowds for the Lexington Barbecue Festival and the Autumn Jubilee, which is held at Dan Nicholas Park on the first weekend of October. Winter camping is possible but cold and damp: January averages a high near 47°F and a low near 31°F, with occasional light snow. Many private campgrounds stay open year-round; verify amenity hours before booking off-season.

This was my first experience personally using an RV rental service and it could not have gone better. Zack was very helpful and accommodating with all the questions and concerns I had and I would not hesitate to rent from him again. Pick up and drop off was very flexible. The unit was very clean. Everything worked as it should.

Corey and Ashley were wonderful. Very nice RV. Pictures don’t it justice. Obviously well taken care of. I will definitely be renting from them again.

Cannot say enough good things about our experience renting from Corey. Very helpful with the renting process and what to expect. I chose the drop off option and it went very smooth - Corey gave a detailed rundown of the RV making sure I knew the basics. Everything was as described, well maintained, and just what we were looking for for our few days away. Corey was quick to respond when I had any questions and made sure everything was good. Highly recommend renting from Corey!

Booking and how to reserve
Reservation systems vary by operator. Dan Nicholas Park is run by Rowan County; online reservations are available, and the campground store can be reached at 704-216-7808. Sites and cabins book well ahead for summer weekends and the early-October Autumn Jubilee, and payment in full is required to hold a reservation, with a two-night minimum on weekends.
Forest Lake RV and Camping Resort is part of the Thousand Trails network and is booked directly through Thousand Trails or membership channels. High Rock Lake Marina and Campground handles reservations directly by phone; call ahead for waterfront sites and cabins, which turn over quickly in warm months.
Cross Winds Family Campground and Carolina Rose Campground are smaller private operators, so call or book through each operator's listed reservation partners. For any lakeside site over a summer holiday, book several weeks out.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean wooded and rolling rather than open and flat. Reviewers at Dan Nicholas Park note mostly 50/30 amp electric with water sites and a few no-hookup sites, and there are no sewer hookups at the campsites, though a dump station is available on-site. Larger rigs should confirm site length in advance. The park gate closes at night and guests are given the code at check-in.
Hookups are stronger at private resorts. Forest Lake and High Rock Lake Marina both offer full hookups with 30/50 amp service, and Forest Lake adds two swimming pools, a camp store, mini golf, and gated entry. Cell coverage is uneven under tree cover; camper reports at Dan Nicholas suggest AT&T tends to work better than Verizon inside the campground.
Expect family-heavy crowds in summer and quieter shoulder-season stays. Bring bug spray for lake sites, and a leveler or blocks, since several sites in the area sit on grades.
