Campgrounds and RV parks near Windsor, NC

Water recreation drives most trips. The Cashie River supports kayaking, canoeing, and motorboat access, and the campground along the river has direct river access and a boardwalk out onto the water. Fishing is popular year-round on the river and on nearby Albemarle Sound tributaries. History travelers can walk the Windsor Historic District, which includes the Bertie County Courthouse and a range of 19th- and early 20th-century churches and homes. Edenton, about a half-hour east, adds a colonial waterfront and state historic site. For a state-park day trip, Merchants Millpond State Park in Gates County centers on a 760-acre millpond more than 190 years old, with old-growth bald cypress trees and a wetland environment at the northernmost point of the American alligator's range.

Windsor has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, muggy summers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. April through May and mid-September through October are typically the strongest booking periods. Summer brings heat, high humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, along with Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and peaks in late summer and early fall. RV renters should watch tropical forecasts and confirm park status before travel, since coastal-plain campgrounds can close on short notice for flooding or storm damage. Winter camping is possible in the Windsor area because many private parks stay open year-round, though some state park facilities operate on reduced hours or close for maintenance. The tent and trailer family campground at Merchants Millpond State Park is closed due to construction until further notice, so renters planning a park-based itinerary should confirm status directly with NC State Parks.

Expect small, quiet parks rather than resort-style destinations. Cashie River Campground has 6 pull-through sites with 30 and 50-amp hookups, 8 back-in sites with full hookups, and 4 tent sites in the center of the campground. The bathhouse is newly constructed, handicap-accessible, and includes a washing machine and dryer, but on-site staff may not be present, so plan for self check-in. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers in town, though Wi-Fi at smaller parks can be limited or absent. Roads into Windsor are flat and easy to navigate with larger rigs, and downtown sites put renters within walking distance of shops and restaurants. Bring insect repellent from late spring through early fall, and secure food and trash at parks near swampland where wildlife is active. Pets are welcome at most area campgrounds on leash.
