Campgrounds and RV parks near Winfall, NC

Paddling is the signature activity. Merchants Millpond State Park centers on a 760-acre millpond more than 190 years old, with hiking trails, paddling routes through cypress-tupelo swamp, and boat rentals available on site. The park sits at the northernmost point of the American alligator's range, and Lassiter Swamp offers particularly scenic paddling through old-growth cypress groves draped in Spanish moss. Pettigrew State Park wraps around Lake Phelps, one of North Carolina's largest natural lakes, and is a primary wintering location for tundra swans and Canada geese. The park offers hiking and biking trails, a boardwalk through wetland forest, and access to the historic Somerset Place plantation. Closer to Winfall, downtown Hertford and Edenton offer waterfront walks, small museums, and restaurants, and the Chowan River and Albemarle Sound provide fishing from public ramps.

The region has a humid subtropical climate with no dry season. Winters are mild and damp, summers are hot and humid, and spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping, with lower humidity and fewer biting insects. Summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heavy mosquito activity in swampy areas. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks in late summer and early fall. Coastal North Carolina parks can close on short notice for tropical systems, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories before and during a trip. State park camping schedules currently require close attention. Due to pending construction, the tent and trailer family campground at Merchants Millpond is closed until further notice, though backpack, paddle-in, and group paddle-in sites remain available for reservation year-round. Pettigrew State Park closed its campground and office for planned renovations that will add a new bathhouse, camper cabins, and RV sites with full hookups; the park remains open for day use while work continues. Confirm status with each park before booking.

This is flat, low-elevation country. Roads into state parks are narrow rural routes, and cell coverage can be patchy inside the swamps and along Lake Phelps. Bring paper directions and top off fuel in Hertford, Edenton, or Elizabeth City before heading to remote sites. Expect biting insects from late spring through early fall, especially near standing water. Long sleeves, permethrin-treated clothing, and repellent are worth packing. Alligators are present at Merchants Millpond but are generally shy; standard swamp precautions apply. Full hookups are the exception rather than the rule in this region. State-park sites here are typically non-electric with tent pads, fire rings, picnic tables, and bathhouses. RV renters who need 30 or 50 amp service, sewer, and reliable Wi-Fi should plan on a private park such as Rocky Hock Campground and use the state parks for day trips.
