Campgrounds and RV parks near Winton, NC

Paddling is the headline activity. Merchants Millpond State Park offers marked routes through cypress and tupelo swamps, and the Cashie River in Windsor is a designated blackwater paddling trail with boardwalk access from town. The Chowan River, reachable via boat ramps at Rocky Hock and other landings, is popular for fishing and open-water boating. Historic Edenton, about 40 minutes south, has a walkable colonial waterfront, a state historic site, and lighthouse tours. Windsor offers the Roanoke/Cashie River Center and treehouse walks. Families with kids can combine campground pools, fishing ponds, and mini golf at private parks with easy state park day trips.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel here. Temperatures are mild, humidity is manageable, and bugs are far less aggressive than in midsummer. Wildflowers and migrating waterfowl are active in spring, and fall brings cool nights and lower campground occupancy. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy, especially in the swamps around Merchants Millpond, where mosquitoes and biting flies can be intense from June through August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. This is also Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from mid-August through October and can prompt short-notice closures at coastal-plain parks. Winter is the quiet season. Many private parks in the area, including Rocky Hock Campground and Cashie River Campground and RV Park, remain open year-round, though amenities like game rooms and pools may be closed. Note that the family tent and trailer campground at Merchants Millpond State Park is closed for construction until further notice, though backpack and paddle-in sites remain open, so confirm status before planning a state-park stay.

Roads into and around Winton are flat and RV-friendly. Most private parks in the area offer 30 and 50 amp full hookups, laundry, and clean bathhouses, though sites vary in shade and privacy. Rocky Hock Campground includes a fishing pond and par-3 golf course, and Cashie River Campground and RV Park has a mix of pull-through and back-in sites with river access. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers along US 13 and US 17, but Wi-Fi at smaller parks can be limited. Groceries and fuel are available in Ahoskie, Windsor, and Edenton. Come prepared for insects near water from late spring through early fall, keep an eye on tropical weather forecasts in late summer, and expect a quiet, rural pace rather than resort-style amenities.
