Campgrounds in Ohio
Ohio offers RV renters a dense network of state parks, county parks, national forest land, and private resorts across a state that runs from Lake Erie down to the Ohio River. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources operates a wide system of state park campgrounds with primitive, electric, and full-service sites, and most parks are designed to accommodate trailers and motorhomes.
For first-time visitors, the most established RV destinations include Hocking Hills State Park in the southeast, Mohican State Park between Columbus and Cleveland, East Harbor State Park on the Lake Erie shoreline, Salt Fork State Park east of Columbus, and Alum Creek State Park just north of the capital. These five parks anchor most statewide RV itineraries.
Ohio's geography makes a multi-stop trip practical. A renter can base near Columbus and reach Hocking Hills in under an hour, drive ninety minutes north to Mohican, then continue to the Lake Erie shore in another two hours. Cuyahoga Valley National Park sits within easy reach of the northeast corridor, and Wayne National Forest covers much of the southeast hill country.
Things to Do at Ohio Campgrounds
Activities vary sharply by region. At Hocking Hills State Park, the draw is the gorge trail system that links Old Man's Cave, Cedar Falls, and Ash Cave, along with rock climbing and rappelling in the adjacent state forest. Mohican State Park is built around canoeing and tubing on the Mohican River, plus a covered bridge, hiking trails, and a connecting state forest with bridle paths.
On Lake Erie, East Harbor State Park provides swim beaches, a marina, and access to the Bass Islands and Kelleys Island via nearby ferries. Salt Fork State Park surrounds the largest inland lake in the state, with boat ramps, a lodge, and a sand swim beach. Alum Creek State Park offers a long sand beach, mountain biking trails, and proximity to Columbus attractions, which makes it a frequent first or last stop for renters flying into the capital.

Seasonal Patterns for RV Travel in Ohio

March - May
63° / 41°F 98 mmWet and variable; severe storms possible in late spring
- summer
June - August
83° / 64°F 105 mmHot and humid; lakeside sites book months ahead
- fall
September - November
65° / 44°F 78 mmCool with strong color through October in the hills
- winter
December - February
38° / 23°F 72 mmCold; many campground services closed or reduced
The core RV season runs from late April through October. Spring brings reliable wildflower hikes and the warbler migration along the Lake Erie marshes, but it is also a wet stretch of the year, and low-lying sites in parks like Mohican and Alum Creek can hold water after heavy storms. Tornado risk peaks in spring and persists into early summer.
Summer is the busiest period. Lake Erie shoreline parks, Hocking Hills, and Mohican fill weekends quickly, and humidity combined with daytime highs in the mid-80s makes electric hookups for air conditioning a practical priority. Fall is widely regarded as a strong window for RV travel: lower humidity, color through October in the southeast hills, and lighter weekday crowds.
Many Ohio state park campgrounds remain open year-round, but services such as showerhouses, dump stations, and camp stores are reduced or closed in winter. Renters traveling between December and March should call the park directly to confirm which loops and facilities are operating.

How to Book a Campsite in Ohio
Ohio state park campsites are booked through ReserveOhio at reserveohio.com or by calling 866-644-6727, with the call center open from 7am to 7pm daily and closed on some holidays. Reservations open six months ahead of the arrival date for campsites and unique getaways such as camper cabins and yurts, and twelve months ahead for cabins and day-use facilities. Parks that use the reservation system no longer offer walk-in campsites, and Jesse Owens State Park is the only park that still offers first-come, first-served camping with on-site registration.
For popular RV loops at Hocking Hills, Mohican, East Harbor, Salt Fork, and Alum Creek, booking at the six-month opening window is recommended for summer weekends and holidays. State forest sites at Hocking and Mohican-Memorial use a separate reservation system run by the ODNR Division of Forestry, and that system caps stays at 14 days within any 30-day window.
What to Expect at Ohio Campgrounds
Every Ohio state park campsite includes a parking pad, picnic table, and fire ring. Hookup levels vary: Hocking Hills and Mohican both offer full-hookup loops with 50-amp service that accommodate larger rigs, while parks like East Harbor lean heavily on electric-only sites, some in open, exposed sections with little shade. Dump stations are standard at nearly all developed campgrounds.
Cell service is generally reliable across central and northern Ohio but can drop in the deeper hollows around Hocking Hills and Wayne National Forest. Mosquitoes and ticks are active from late spring through early fall, particularly in the river-bottom sites at Mohican and Alum Creek. Several parks turn muddy after sustained rain, so renters should ask about gravel versus turf pads when booking. Pets are allowed in most campgrounds with leash rules, and alcohol policies are set park by park.

What should I know about driving an RV in Ohio: any local tips or hazards?
Ohio's highways are flat and wide, perfect for first-time RVers. Watch for low bridges (especially underpasses in older Cincinnati neighborhoods) and respect weight limits on rural county roads. Alum Creek and Mohican State Parks have clean bathhouses, playgrounds, and many sites with full hookups. Private campgrounds like Cross Creek Camping Resort add WiFi, pools, and laundry.
