Campgrounds near Brilliant, Ohio
Brilliant sits on the west bank of the Ohio River in Jefferson County, directly across from West Virginia's northern panhandle and about 40 minutes southwest of Pittsburgh. The location gives RV travelers access to two distinct state park systems within a short drive, plus small private campgrounds along the river and in the surrounding hills.
Jefferson Lake State Park sits close to the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, about an hour from Pittsburgh and roughly an hour and a half from Akron. Its camping area accommodates tents and trailers with 5 electric sites and 44 non-electric sites, latrines, water fountains, picnic tables, and horse tie lines. Across the river in West Virginia, Tomlinson Run State Park covers 1,398 acres near the top of the Northern Panhandle along an Ohio River tributary, with a wilderness area of forested hills and sandstone cliffs balanced by a developed area with traditional park amenities.
Closer to town, Ernies Acres Campground, Big Gs RV Campground, and Hotel RV West Alexander cover shorter stays and pull-through needs for travelers moving between Pittsburgh, Wheeling, and the Ohio River corridor.
Things to do around Brilliant
Jefferson Lake State Park is built around hiking, fishing, and horseback riding. Multi-use trails serve hikers, bikers, and horseback riders across roughly 18 to 20 miles of tread, with options ranging from short campground loops to longer bridle routes. Anglers pull bass, catfish, redear sunfish, and bluegill from the lake, and boats with electric motors up to four horsepower are permitted.
Tomlinson Run State Park adds a swimming pool with a 182-foot waterslide, a disc golf course, mini golf, boat rentals, and several miles of hiking trails, making it a strong pick for families. The wilderness section is well-suited for spotting red foxes, skunks, rabbits, black bears, and white-tailed deer.
For a day off the campground, Wheeling and Pittsburgh are both within an easy drive for museums, ballgames, and city dining.

The Brilliant area has a humid continental climate. Summers are hot and winters are cold, with winter lows dropping to around 20°F and annual snowfall of roughly 28 inches. June is the wettest month with about 121 mm of rainfall, while February is the driest at around 63 mm, so plan for thunderstorms in early summer and possible mud on unpaved sites.
Season length varies by park. Tomlinson Run State Park is open year-round, but its campground runs spring through fall, and camper cabins are available to rent between April and October. Ohio state parks in this region generally follow a similar spring-through-fall camping window, with peak demand tied to school holidays and fall color weekends in October.
Shoulder-season trips in late April, May, and September tend to offer cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier site selection than midsummer weekends.
How to book campsites near Brilliant
Ohio state parks use a centralized reservation system. At Jefferson Lake State Park, reservations may be made up to six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727, and the camp host cannot accept payment on site, so book before you arrive.
West Virginia parks use their own system. At Tomlinson Run State Park, reservations require a minimum of two consecutive nights on Friday and Saturday or one night Sunday through Thursday, with a 14-night maximum stay. Reservations must be made at least seven days in advance, and only 15 sites accommodate rigs 30 to 40 feet, with just three fitting rigs 40 to 50 feet, so measure carefully.
Private options like Ernies Acres Campground, Big Gs RV Campground, and Hotel RV West Alexander are booked directly with each operator.
What to expect on-site
Sites in this region skew rustic rather than resort-style. Jefferson Lake provides latrines, water fountains, picnic tables, horse tie lines, and a dump station, and many sites in Ohio state parks are not level enough for larger RVs, so choosing a site sight unseen carries some risk. Cell service can be patchy in the wooded hollows around the lake.
Tomlinson Run is more developed. The campground has a contact station, convenience store, dump station, and two bathhouses with showers and laundry facilities, and generator use is allowed during the day but must be silenced during quiet hours of 10 PM to 6 AM.
Roads into both parks are paved but narrow with curves; drivers of larger motorhomes should scout turns and check site dimensions before towing in.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Brilliant, OH?

ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/jefferson-lake-state-park-campgroundDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Brilliant, Ohio?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Ohio, no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required. Ohio law exempts recreational vehicles used for personal travel from CDL rules, even for large Class A motorhomes. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during checkout, usually in just a few minutes. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters in Brilliant are surprised how quickly they are cleared to hit the road toward the Ohio River Scenic Byway.

You do not need to dig through individual listings looking for policy details, RVezy applies the policy consistently across the platform. If plans shift, open your booking in the RVezy dashboard or message the RVezy support team to walk through your options.

ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/jefferson-lake-state-park-campgroundWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Brilliant, OH?
Late September through mid-October is hands-down the magical window for a Brilliant RV trip: daytime highs sit comfortably in the low 60s, humidity drops, and the oak-hickory forests of the Appalachian foothills light up in fiery reds and oranges. July and August bring warm 83°F days but also high humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, so air conditioning becomes a must-have. Winter (December to February) drops to the low 30s with occasional snow and ice, perfect for adventurous renters seeking quiet, discounted stays. For first-timers, target the last two weeks of September: peak foliage, mild evenings, and far fewer crowds than summer.
forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Brilliant&state=OH&site=PBZ&textField1=40.2685&textField2=-80.6249I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting one in Brilliant?
You'll be just fine, first time renting an RV is honestly easier than most people expect, and Brilliant is a great place to start. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering the engine, propane, water systems, slide-outs, and dump procedures, so you're never left guessing. For your first trip, consider a smaller Class C motorhome or a travel trailer with delivery, where the host levels and hooks everything up for you. Brilliant's quieter rural roads (State Route 7 along the river, US 22) are much friendlier than navigating downtown Pittsburgh. Pro tip: ask your host to record a short video of the walkthrough on your phone, you'll thank yourself the first time you need to fire up the water heater at Jefferson Lake.

Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking using a credit or debit card, no cash to the host, no surprise charges. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup and released after your trip wraps up, assuming no damage or extra cleaning. To avoid hiccups, take time-stamped photos and a walkaround video of the RV at both pickup and drop-off, this is the single best habit experienced renters swear by. Return with a full fuel tank, empty holding tanks (or pay the dump fee), and a tidy interior. Pro tip: keep all receipts from your trip in case a charge needs to be discussed later.
