Campgrounds and RV parks near New Middletown, OH

The region's main outdoor draw is Beaver Creek State Park, a roughly 3,000-acre park in eastern Columbiana County that protects Little Beaver Creek, a state and national wild and scenic river. Hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and paddling are the core activities, and Little Beaver Creek is widely regarded as one of the best canoe runs in Ohio, with swift water through a scenic gorge. History stops are close at hand. Visitors can explore Gaston's Mill, a pioneer village, and remnants of the Sandy and Beaver Canal inside the park. The volunteer-run Wildlife Education Center houses an Ohio wildlife room, live turtles and snakes, hundreds of mounted specimens, and Native American artifacts, and is open Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 5pm, from the first weekend of May through the first weekend of October. In winter, park visitors can enjoy sledding and cross-country skiing when conditions permit.

Peak RV season in northeast Ohio runs from mid-May through mid-October. Summer brings the warmest, most reliable weather for swimming and paddling, and it is also when private family campgrounds run their fullest activity schedules. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book up early at both private parks and the state park, so reserve well ahead. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Spring can be wet and muddy on unpaved sites, while fall delivers hardwood color through October and lower bug pressure. The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center runs a limited season, open weekends only from the first weekend of May through the first weekend of October, which is worth noting if a museum stop is part of the plan. Winter camping is limited. Youngstown has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and average annual snowfall around 40 to 45 inches, enhanced at times by lake-effect snow off Lake Erie. Many private campgrounds close for the season, and state-park amenities scale back.

Private parks in the New Middletown area are typical of Ohio family campgrounds: paved or gravel pads, water and electric on most sites, a central dump station, and shared bathhouses. Amenities vary widely by park, so confirm sewer hookups and 30/50-amp service when booking a larger rig. Expectations at Beaver Creek State Park are different. The family campground has six electric sites and a larger number of non-electric sites, and it operates on limited well water, so RVs cannot fill onboard fresh-water tanks and campers should arrive with full tanks. There is no shower house at the campground, only pit toilets, a dump station, and potable water spigots. Access matters for big rigs. A one-lane bridge on Echo Dell Road cannot accommodate vehicles with trailers or RVs, so approach the park office, Wildlife Education Center, Gaston's Mill, and pioneer village from the south when traveling in a large vehicle.
