Campgrounds near Afton, Oklahoma
Afton sits on the northwestern shore of Grand Lake O' the Cherokees in northeastern Oklahoma, a 46,500-acre reservoir with roughly 1,300 miles of shoreline created by Pensacola Dam on the Neosho River. The lake is managed by the Grand River Dam Authority and surrounded by the small communities of Grove, Monkey Island, Afton, Ketchum, Langley, and Disney, making it one of the state's most visited recreation areas.
RV travelers have a mix of state-run and private options within a short drive. Bernice State Park occupies the northwestern corner of the lake and offers sites with 50-amp electric and water hookups. Private resorts along the shoreline, including Grand Country Lakeside RV Park, Zen Monkey RV Retreat, Fairland RV Camp, and Monkey Island RV Resort and Cabins, add full-hookup sites, cabins, and marina access.
The region sits in the foothills of the Ozarks, so terrain rolls gently and shorelines are wooded. Afton itself is a small town with basic services; Grove and Vinita provide the closest full-service grocery and fuel stops for RV trips.
Things to do near Afton
Grand Lake is the main draw. Boating, water skiing, tubing, and swimming dominate summer, and outfitters around the lake rent pontoons, ski boats, and jet skis by the hour or day, so travelers can get on the water without towing their own boat. Bernice State Park has a designated swimming beach, two boat ramps, and a paved one-mile walking path that is ADA accessible.
Anglers come for a lake nicknamed the Crappie Capital of the World, with strong populations of largemouth bass, sunfish, white bass, channel catfish, and bluegill. Spring paddlefish snagging is a regional specialty on nearby waters.
Off the water, families can visit the Bernice Nature Center, Har-Ber Village in Grove, Lendonwood Gardens, and Darryl Starbird's National Rod and Custom Car Hall of Fame Museum in Bernice. Winter draws bald eagle watchers to the Grand River below Pensacola Dam.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when water temperatures are warm and the lake is busy with boats, concerts, and festivals. Sites at Bernice State Park and private resorts along the shoreline fill fastest on summer weekends and around Independence Day and Labor Day. Booking weeks ahead is recommended for holiday windows.
Late April and early May bring pleasant temperatures and thinner crowds, but May is also the wettest month of the year and severe thunderstorms are common across northeastern Oklahoma in spring. Fall offers cooler temperatures, strong bass fishing, and Ozark foliage in October and November.
Winter is the quiet season. Bernice State Park operates year-round with online reservations, though only a small portion of the campground remains active during the coldest months. From late fall through early spring, the Grand River below Pensacola Dam becomes a reliable spot for viewing American bald eagles.
How to book campgrounds near Afton
Bernice State Park uses the Oklahoma State Parks reservation system through TravelOK. All campsites are available online, and reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance. There are no first-come, first-served sites in the Oklahoma system. Cancellations must be made at least five days before the scheduled arrival date to receive a full refund; cancellations inside that window forfeit the first night's fees. Weekend stays require a two-night minimum, and holiday periods require three nights.
Private resorts such as Grand Country Lakeside RV Park, Zen Monkey RV Retreat, Fairland RV Camp, and Monkey Island RV Resort and Cabins take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Holiday weekends and major lake events often carry stricter cancellation terms, so check each property's policy before booking.
What to expect on-site
Bernice State Park has 33 RV sites with 50-amp electric and water hookups, two comfort stations with hot showers, a centrally located dump station, and primitive tent sites spread across an 88-acre park area. Sites use concrete pads and include a picnic table, grill, and fire ring. Many sites offer lake views, though the shoreline is shallow and the campground has two boat ramps on the west side.
Private resorts on Grand Lake typically add full hookups with sewer, pools, laundry, and marina access. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally reliable around Bernice and the Monkey Island peninsula.
RVers should note that summer heat and humidity are significant, shade varies by site, and severe weather is possible in spring, so a NOAA weather radio and a plan for storm shelter are worth packing.

You'll need to be 25 or older, and ID verification happens quickly through the RVezy platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? If a host cancels, guests receive a full refund or RVezy credits. That flexibility makes it easy to lock in a Grand Lake summer weekend now and finalize details as the trip approaches.

Driving an RV around Afton is refreshingly easy. Watch for two things: spring thunderstorms can bring gusty crosswinds on the turnpike, and a few stretches of original Route 66 like the famous 9-foot-wide Ribbon Road north of Afton are too narrow for big rigs, stick to the modern alignment in your motorhome.
