Campgrounds and RV parks near Brent, OK

Lake Tenkiller is the main draw within a short drive. Known as Oklahoma's Clear Water Wonderland and nestled in the Cookson Hills, the lake is popular with fishermen, pleasure boaters, and scuba divers, and has 10 marinas and over 20 launching ramps. The Cove at Tenkiller places renters close to boat ramps and marina services. Closer to Brent, the Arkansas River and Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam offer fishing access, wildlife viewing, and paddling. Sallisaw provides groceries, fuel, and laundry, plus the Sequoyah's Cabin historic site honoring the Cherokee scholar who created the syllabary. Families traveling with kids often pair a lake day with an easy hike in the Cookson Hills or a short trip east to Fort Smith, Arkansas, for the Fort Smith National Historic Site and the city's riverfront trails.

Summer is peak season for lake camping. Sallisaw normals show average July and August highs near 91 degrees Fahrenheit, with roughly 19 days per month above 90 degrees. Water levels on Lake Tenkiller are typically at recreation pool, marinas are fully staffed, and lakeside sites book out well in advance for holiday weekends. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. May is the wettest month on average at just under six inches of rain, so spring visitors should expect storm days and possible flooding along low-lying river bottoms. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and good fishing, with foliage in the Cookson Hills usually peaking in late October and early November. Winter camping is possible but limited. Sallisaw averages about 21 freezing nights in January and roughly four inches of snow across the season. Many Corps of Engineers loops close for the off-season, so confirm with the specific campground before booking.

Sites near Brent range from full-hookup private parks with paved pads to more basic Corps loops with electric and water only and a central dump station. Cell service is generally reliable along the I-40 corridor and thinner as roads drop toward the lake and river bottoms. Summer humidity is significant, and biting insects, including chiggers and ticks, are active from late spring through early fall. Bring shade, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water. Severe weather is a real consideration in spring: monitor NOAA Weather Radio and know the tornado shelter plan at the campground. A long-term U.S. Army Corps of Engineers bridge replacement project over Tenkiller Dam began in October 2025 and is expected to last about 2.5 years, which may affect usual routes to lake campgrounds. Larger Class A and fifth-wheel renters should confirm site length and access on the reservation page before arrival.
