Campgrounds and RV parks near Bushyhead, OK

Oologah Lake covers nearly 30,000 acres with more than 200 miles of shoreline, and it is a regional favorite for sailing, fishing, and paddling. Anglers target black bass, crappie, paddlefish, channel and blue catfish, walleye, and hybrid striped bass. Prevailing winds make it one of the most popular sailing lakes in the region. On shore, the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch preserves the humorist's boyhood home and a working ranch overlooking the lake, with Texas Longhorn cattle in the pasture. The Will Rogers Country Centennial Trail stretches 18 miles between Blue Creek Park and the Spillway on the east side of the lake, and is open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. In Claremore, families can visit the Will Rogers Memorial Museum, the J.M. Davis Arms and Historical Museum, and Claremore Lake. Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs runs live thoroughbred racing in winter and spring, and a quarter horse, paint, and Appaloosa meet in fall, and it is walkable from the KOA.

Northeast Oklahoma has a humid subtropical climate with four clear seasons. Spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, with May the wettest month, when rain falls for roughly 15 to 16 days and totals around 130 millimetres. Spring is also peak severe-weather season, with thunderstorms and tornado risk elevated from April through June, so RV travelers should identify storm shelters at their chosen campground. Summer runs hot and humid. July is the warmest period, with average highs near 91 degrees Fahrenheit and lows near 72 degrees. Lake sites at Oologah fill quickly on holiday weekends, and shaded pads are worth requesting. Fall is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with mild days, lower humidity, and the return of live racing at Will Rogers Downs. Winters are short but can turn sharply cold. January highs average around 45 degrees Fahrenheit with lows near 30 degrees. Most private RV parks in the area stay open year round, while some Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Oologah reduce services or close loops in the off season.

Most RV sites in the Bushyhead area are on level gravel or paved pads. At Tulsa NE / Will Rogers Downs KOA Journey, sites accommodate large rigs and pull-throughs, with 50 and 30 amp electric, full water and sewer, WiFi, restrooms, laundry, and shower facilities. Corps of Engineers sites on Oologah Lake tend to be more rustic. Redbud Bay offers 11 sites with 30-amp electric and water hookups and pit toilets on site, with flush toilets, a shower house, and an RV dump station across the dam at Hawthorn Bluff. Hawthorn Bluff itself provides electric sites, showers, a dump station, a swimming beach, and playgrounds. Come prepared for changeable weather. Layers are useful year round, and packing camp chairs, extension cords, personal toiletries, and a flashlight for walks to shared facilities is recommended. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Claremore but can thin out along the lake.
