Water recreation drives most trips. On shore, families visit the Fort Gibson Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark that preserves original 19th-century buildings alongside a reconstruction of the early log fort and stockade, with exhibits in the historic hospital and commissary. The Three Forks Nature Center at Sequoyah State Park adds exhibits, live animals, and ranger programming that work well for kids on a rainy afternoon.

The region has a humid subtropical climate. Summers are hot and winters are cool with occasional snowfall, and the area is fairly wet overall, with spring the wettest season and frequent heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms. Spring storms can push lake levels up and cause temporary Corps campground closures, so RV renters should check facility status before arrival. Summer is the peak booking window. School-break weekends fill state park loops and Corps campgrounds along the lake, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day sell out earliest. Water temperatures stay comfortable for swimming from June through early September. Fall brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and color in the hills near the dam. Hookup levels vary by campground. At Sequoyah State Park, RV camping includes full hook-ups at the Choctaw and Seminole campgrounds, with water and electric service only at Cherokee. Sequoyah Bay offers water and 30-amp or 50-amp electric hookups with two dump stations. Corps campgrounds tend to offer electric and water with a central dump station rather than full sewer at every site. Expect gated entries at many Corps campgrounds, staffed entry stations during the season, boat ramps, swim beaches, and comfort stations with showers. State park loops add playgrounds, picnic pavilions, and, at Sequoyah, a lodge with a zero-entry pool and splash pad nearby. Cell coverage is generally serviceable near the towns of Fort Gibson, Wagoner, and Hulbert, and thinner in the more remote Corps loops. Bring bug spray for summer, plan for thunderstorm shelter given the region's spring severe-weather season, and confirm max RV length in advance since some older loops have tight turns.
