Campgrounds near Locust Grove, Oklahoma
Locust Grove sits in Mayes County in northeast Oklahoma's Green Country, within easy reach of two of the region's most popular RV-camping lakes: Lake Hudson and Grand Lake O' the Cherokees. Lake Hudson, also known as Markham Ferry Reservoir, lies about two miles northwest of town and is managed by the Grand River Dam Authority. Tulsa is roughly an hour southwest for supply runs or day trips.
Waterfront options close to town include Lake Hudson RV Park and Lake Hudson Resort, both on Lake Hudson with full-hookup RV sites and lake frontage. Chouteau Moto RV Park sits a short drive south toward the MidAmerica Industrial Park corridor, and Thousand Oaks Resort rounds out the private-park options in the area.
For a state-park experience, Spavinaw State Park lies northeast of Locust Grove on Spavinaw Lake and is managed as the Spavinaw Area at Grand Lake State Park within the Oklahoma State Parks system, giving RV renters access to a reservable public campground alongside the private lakeside parks.
Things to do near Locust Grove
Fishing drives most trips to this area. Lake Hudson is considered one of the top bass fisheries in Oklahoma and is a regular stop on tournament trails, with largemouth, spotted, hybrid striper, white bass, catfish, crappie, and paddlefish all present. Boat ramps and marinas are spread along both Lake Hudson and the nearby Grand Lake shoreline.
Families with younger kids often head to Spavinaw State Park, where facilities include RV and tent sites, a comfort station with showers, a covered picnic shelter, a playground, and a shallow swimming beach that suits small children. Hiking and hunting are available in the adjacent Spavinaw Wildlife Management Area.
Off the water, Tulsa is within day-trip range for museums, dining, and shopping, and the nearby towns of Pryor and Salina offer local restaurants, Blue Hole Park, and grocery stops.

Northeast Oklahoma has four distinct seasons and can swing from mild to severe within a single week. Spring is the wettest stretch of the year, with May averaging over five inches of rain in the Pryor area, and the region sits inside Tornado Alley, so RV renters should track NWS Tulsa alerts and identify sturdy shelter access during April and May.
Summer is hot and humid. Climate records for Pryor show roughly 19 days at or above 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July and nearly 21 in August, so shaded sites and 50-amp hookups for air conditioning matter. Lakes stay warm and busy through Labor Day, and weekends at private resorts and Spavinaw fill quickly.
Fall is the most comfortable window for touring, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and hardwood color across the Ozark foothills. Winter is generally quiet, with occasional cold snaps and light snow. Spavinaw State Park is listed as open year round, but some private-park amenities scale back between late fall and early spring.

How to book campgrounds near Locust Grove
Oklahoma State Parks, including the Spavinaw Area, book through the state's ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations can be made for today and up to 11 months in advance, so summer weekends and holiday windows should be locked in well ahead of the trip. Sites at Spavinaw include water and electric RV pads plus tent-only sites, and there is a dump station on the grounds.
Private lakeside parks such as Lake Hudson RV Park, Lake Hudson Resort, Chouteau Moto RV Park, and Thousand Oaks Resort take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Lake Hudson Resort lists 64 big-rig-friendly full-hookup RV sites, so larger Class A rentals and fifth-wheels can fit, but calling ahead to confirm site length and pull-through availability is recommended before booking a long rig.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of wooded lakefront sites and open gravel pads. State-park loops at Spavinaw are more rustic, with 26 water-and-electric RV sites and 75 tent sites, a comfort station with restrooms and coin-operated showers, a dump station, a playground, and a swimming beach. Private resorts on Lake Hudson generally offer full hookups, Wi-Fi, and amenities like clubhouses, mini-golf, and community fire areas.
Cell coverage is reliable near the highways and in town but can drop in the coves around Spavinaw and along the northern arms of Lake Hudson. Bring bug spray from late spring through early fall, and watch for ticks and chiggers in wooded areas. Severe-weather awareness matters year round in this part of Oklahoma. Know the nearest storm shelter or solid structure before setting up camp.
