Campgrounds near Lyons Switch, Oklahoma
Lyons Switch sits in Cherokee County in eastern Oklahoma, within short driving distance of Lake Tenkiller, the reservoir that anchors most camping in this corner of the state. The lake covers 12,900 acres and has a shoreline of over 130 miles in the Cookson Hills, and the Army Corps of Engineers, Oklahoma State Parks, and private concessionaires together operate multiple campgrounds around its perimeter.
RV travelers have a mix of options within about a 30-minute drive. Private hookup parks such as Crystal Creeks RV Park, Tenkiller Skies, and Echota Village RV Park cater to travelers who want full utilities and a base for exploring the lake, while Sixshooter Marina & Cabins combines lakeside sites with boat access. For a state-park experience, Cherokee Landing State Park sits on a peninsula at the north end of Lake Tenkiller and offers RV sites with electric and water that can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet.
Lake Tenkiller lies south of Tahlequah, the capital of the Cherokee Nation, which is the nearest full-service town for groceries, propane, and supplies.
Things to do near Lyons Switch
Water activities dominate the area. Lake Tenkiller offers water skiing, fishing, boating, tubing, and scuba diving, with clear water that has earned it a reputation as one of Oklahoma's clearest lakes. Anglers target black bass, crappie, white bass, and catfish, and below Tenkiller dam is the Lower Illinois River designated trout stream, a year-round trout area stocked with rainbows approximately every two weeks.
On land, Cherokee Landing State Park features the Red Fox hiking trail, spring wildflowers, birding with migratory cranes, an outdoor volleyball court, and a 9-hole disc golf course. Families often add a day trip to Tahlequah for Cherokee National history sites, or a float trip on the Illinois River, which feeds the lake.

Peak camping season around Lake Tenkiller runs April through September, with reservations recommended on weekends. Summer brings hot, muggy days with highs commonly in the upper 80s and low 90s Fahrenheit, and it is the busiest window for the marinas, swim beaches, and scuba park. Book Corps and state park sites several weeks ahead for holiday weekends.
Spring is the wettest stretch, with May typically the peak precipitation month, averaging around 163 mm of rainfall. Thunderstorms can be intense, and the south end of Cherokee Landing State Park can be subject to flooding during high water events, so RV camping is relegated to the north end of the park. Wildflowers and bird activity are strong in April and May.
Fall brings cooler nights, lighter crowds, and steady lake fishing. Winters are cold with occasional snow, and although Cherokee Landing State Park is open year round, some marina facilities and private operators shift to reduced hours between November and March.
How to book campgrounds near Lyons Switch
Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Lake Tenkiller are reserved through Recreation.gov on a rolling basis, exactly 6 months in advance at 10:00 AM Eastern Time, and popular electric loops fill quickly for summer weekends and holidays.
Cherokee Landing State Park and other Oklahoma state park sites are reserved through the Oklahoma State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance. Reservations must be cancelled 5 days in advance of the scheduled arrival date to receive a full refund, and cancellations inside of the 5-day window will forfeit the first night's fees.
Private options such as Crystal Creeks RV Park, Tenkiller Skies, Sixshooter Marina & Cabins, and Echota Village RV Park book directly through the operator or through third-party platforms, and typically request a deposit at the time of reservation.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Lyons Switch is oak-hickory forest predominating the upland sites, with the Cookson Hills rolling above the lake. Expect a mix of open and shaded sites depending on loop selection.
RV site standards vary by operator. State park loops at Cherokee Landing offer electric and water and accommodate rigs up to 40 feet, and the park has a dump station, rentable shelters, and a group RV camp. Corps campgrounds typically provide electric sites, flush toilets, hot showers, swim beaches, and boat ramps, with some non-electric loops as well.
Cell coverage is uneven in coves and shoreline pockets, so download maps before arrival. Wildlife such as deer and turkey is common, and camping is not permitted on the Tenkiller WMA itself, though the Army Corps of Engineers has several campgrounds adjacent to or close by the area.

For a typical 300-mile weekend loop to Tenkiller and back, fuel usually runs about $90 to $140. Oklahoma State Parks (including Lake Tenkiller, Sequoyah, Greenleaf, and Cherokee Landing) take reservations well in advance through the official Oklahoma State Parks reservation system, and summer weekends plus holidays like Memorial Day and Labor Day book up 4 to 6 months out. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Tenkiller and Robert S. Kerr Lake use Recreation.gov, bookable up to 6 months ahead. Private parks like the Sallisaw KOA are easier on shorter notice. Pro tip: for fall foliage trips in mid-October, reserve by July, and always grab a waterfront loop at Tenkiller's Strayhorn Landing if you can, it's the local favorite.
recreation.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Lyons Switch?
Driving here is relaxed and very RV-friendly. Lyons Switch sits in rolling Ozark-foothill country along U.S. Highway 59, with mostly two-lane rural roads, light traffic, and gentle grades, a refreshing change if you've ever white-knuckled an urban interchange. Watch for occasional sharp curves on Highway 100 toward Tenkiller and seasonal hazards like spring thunderstorms (April to June) and the rare winter ice storm. Deer are common at dawn and dusk, so ease off the gas in wooded stretches. I-40, about 25 miles south through Sallisaw, gives you a fast, flat connection to Fort Smith, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City. Pro tip: avoid driving during severe weather warnings, pull off at the Sallisaw rest area and wait it out, Oklahoma storms move fast and pass quickly.

Pickup and dropoff are usually scheduled between 1 and 5 PM, with hosts spending 30 to 60 minutes on orientation. Mileage policies typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per night with overage fees of $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lyons%20Switch%2C%20OklahomaHow do payment and the security deposit work for a Lyons Switch RV rental?
Payment is simple and secure, no cash or paper checks involved. You pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, and your funds are held safely until your trip begins. The security deposit is a separate pre-authorization hold (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) placed on your card a few days before pickup and released after dropoff, assuming the RV is returned in good condition with a full fuel tank. To avoid issues, take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff (inside, outside, mileage, fuel gauge) and review the host's checklist together during orientation. Pro tip: use a credit card rather than debit for the deposit hold so it doesn't tie up cash in your checking account during your Oklahoma trip.
