Campgrounds and RV parks near Moodys, OK

Floating the Illinois River is the dominant activity. Outfitters at Eagle Bluff Resort, Diamondhead Resort, and Arrowhead Resort run shorter trips of roughly six miles and longer routes up to about twelve, using rafts, kayaks, canoes, and tubes. The water is Class II, suitable for families and first-timers when levels are normal. Off the river, visitors fish for smallmouth bass in the Illinois, drive south to Lake Tenkiller for swimming and boating, and head into Tahlequah for the Cherokee National History Museum, housed in the original Cherokee National Capitol building. Diamondhead Resort offers on-site lodging options including campgrounds, motel rooms, and a bunkhouse. Hiking, wildlife watching for bald eagles and deer, and evening campfires round out the typical stay.

The period from Memorial Day to Labor Day is the Illinois River's busy season, when families and travelers head to the river to cool off and escape the summer heat. Weekends between June and early August fill fastest, and RV sites at riverside resorts should be booked well ahead. July delivers the warmest water for tubing and swimming, but also the largest crowds and the highest daytime heat. Late spring, from mid-May through late June, is often the best balance of warm weather and manageable river traffic, with wildflowers along the banks and reliable water levels. Early fall, particularly September into early October, brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and color in the Cookson Hills hardwoods. Most Illinois River outfitters along SH-10 operate seasonally from late spring into early fall, and during peak summer many require reservations or appointments due to high demand. Winter paddling is possible for self-outfitted canoers and kayakers with warm layers, though water and air temperatures are cold and services are limited.

The corridor along SH-10 near Moodys is rural, with limited cell coverage in some spots and gas stations spaced miles apart. Resort roads and portions of campgrounds are commonly gravel, so drivers of larger rigs should call ahead about site length, low branches, and turnaround room. Full-hookup RV sites are available at the larger resorts, with 30- and 50-amp service typical at riverside properties. Bathhouses, snack shops, playgrounds, and volleyball or basketball courts are standard at the bigger operations. Summer weekends on the river are lively and social, with large groups common at the popular resorts. Travelers who prefer quiet should target midweek stays or shoulder-season dates. Glass containers and hard liquor are prohibited on the river, cooler size is capped by state rule, and GRDA officers routinely patrol access areas.
