Campgrounds and RV parks near Newkirk, OK

Water recreation drives most trips. Kaw Lake and the Arkansas River have long been known for producing some of Oklahoma's largest catfish, and the lake also offers anglers excellent opportunities to catch crappie, sand (white) bass and walleye. Ten boat launching ramps provide boaters with easy access to Kaw Lake, with two full service marinas located at McFadden Cove and Pioneer Park, and designated swimming areas at Pioneer Park and Sandy Park. On land, the area supports hiking, wildlife viewing, and hunting. Prairie dogs populate the west side of the dam where visitors can pull over and observe their colonies, and during the winter visitors are likely to spot migrating bald eagles, as Kaw Lake has one of the biggest populations in the state, particularly near the Eagle View Trail. Nearby Ponca City adds cultural stops including the Pioneer Woman Museum, the Marland Mansion, and the Standing Bear Museum and Education Center. Families staying at Ponca City RV Park or Junction West Ponca RV Park can reach these attractions in a short drive.

The Kaw Lake camping season is built around spring through fall. Most Kaw Lake campgrounds operate seasonally, with the primary camping season running from spring through fall: Osage Cove is open March 1 through September 28, while Sarge Creek and Bear Creek Cove operate from April 1 to October 31. Confirm current dates on Recreation.gov before booking, as Corps seasons can shift year to year. Spring brings the wettest weather and the highest tornado risk on the southern plains. May is the month with the most rainfall, when rain falls for 14.6 days and accumulates 4.29 inches of precipitation. Summer is hot and humid with strong afternoon sun, and Ponca City records the warmest temperatures in July, averaging a high of 92.7°F and a low of 72.9°F. Fall offers the most comfortable RV weather, with cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable fishing. One of Kaw Lake's most popular winter attractions is the American Bald Eagle, and Kaw Lake traditionally has one of the state's largest populations of wintering bald eagles. Commercial parks near Ponca City stay open year-round for winter travelers.

Sites near Ponca City tend to be level with full hookups, gravel or paved pads, and easy interstate access from I-35. Cell service is generally reliable close to town and along US-77, but drops in parts of the Kaw Lake shoreline. Corps campgrounds around Kaw Lake mix electric and water hookups with primitive options, and most include showers and dump stations. There are nine public use areas and two lake access points located around the lake for visitors to enjoy, and campers can select from over 300 family campsites, many of which are equipped with water and electric hookups. Bring shade and insect repellent in summer; the prairie sun is intense and mosquitoes are common near the water. Wind is a constant factor in this part of Oklahoma. Slide-out awnings and screen rooms should be secured, and high-profile RVs may want to plan travel days around forecast wind advisories.
