Campgrounds and RV parks near Park Hill, OK

Lake Tenkiller is the anchor activity. The lake is considered one of the best places in the state for scuba diving, as its waters are clear from eight to 28 feet, and Tenkiller Scuba Park is a diver's dream, with a sunken airplane fuselage, school bus, helicopter and two boats to explore underwater. Fishing is a year-round draw: the lake is good for black bass, white bass, striped bass, crappie and catfish, and the trout stream below the dam is one of only two year-round trout fisheries in Oklahoma, and is regularly stocked with rainbow trout. On land, Tenkiller State Park features two multi-use trails and one nature trail, and the Tenkiller Multi-Use Trail is a handicap accessible paved trail 1.5 miles in length. In Park Hill proper, the Cherokee Heritage Center campus, with the George M. Murrell Home nearby, covers Cherokee history and the Trail of Tears. Visitors should check current hours before arriving, since the Cherokee Heritage Center has experienced temporary closures in recent seasons.

Summer is the peak season. Lake activities, the state park swimming pool, and daily programming run at full strength: there are daily activities Memorial Day through Labor Day at Tenkiller State Park. Expect hot, humid days, busy boat ramps, and campgrounds filling well in advance on holiday weekends. Spring is the wettest stretch, with thunderstorms and higher lake levels common from March into May. It is also among the windiest times of year and can bring severe weather typical of Green Country Oklahoma. Fall brings cooler nights, quieter shorelines, and reliable fishing, and the Cherokee National Holiday is celebrated each September in Tahlequah, drawing visitors to the region. Winter operations scale back. Through the winter months weekend events and activities are planned at Tenkiller State Park rather than daily programming. A significant access change is also in effect on the lake's south side: the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began a long-term bridge replacement project over Tenkiller Dam, expected to last approximately 2.5 years and may affect the usual route, so travelers should confirm routing before arrival.

The terrain around Park Hill is wooded and rolling, part of the Cookson Hills. Expect narrow county roads leading to lakeside campgrounds, some with steep or twisty final approaches, so RV renters in larger rigs should confirm road access and site length with the campground before arrival. Hookup levels vary: types of camping range from primitive to full hookup and are pretty evenly spread out from one end of the lake to the other. Cell service is generally workable near Tahlequah and Park Hill but can drop in coves and along less-developed stretches of shoreline. Bring water shoes for rocky shorelines, insect repellent for humid evenings, and a fishing license if planning to cast a line. Almost all project lands are open to public hunting except for parks and around the dam and control structures, with principal species being whitetail deer, turkey, rabbit and squirrel, so wear blaze orange during posted hunting seasons if hiking off-park.
