Camping near Perry, Oklahoma
Perry sits along Interstate 35 in north-central Oklahoma, roughly halfway between Oklahoma City and the Kansas border, at the eastern edge of the Cherokee Outlet. The town was born of the 1893 land run that opened the Cherokee Strip for settlement, a moment often described as the largest land run in United States history. The interstate exit makes it a natural overnight stop for RVers moving between Texas and the Midwest, and it also works as a base for exploring Stillwater, Enid, and the surrounding lakes.
RV options close to town include Sooners Corner RV Park and Sunset Ridge RV Park, both convenient to I-35 access. Morning View RV Park and Rivershire RV Resort & Camping give travelers additional full-hookup choices within easy driving distance. For a lake-oriented stay, Lake Carl Blackwell sits west of Stillwater, about a 40-minute drive from Perry, and is owned and operated by Oklahoma State University. Perry Lake, a reservoir on the Upper Black Bear Creek system managed by the City of Perry, also offers primitive camping and RV parking with full electrical, water, and sewer connections.
Things to do around Perry
History is the main draw in town. The Cherokee Strip Museum and Rose Hill School collect, preserve, and interpret the history of the Cherokee Outlet, letting visitors explore life in early Oklahoma from the 1893 opening of the Cherokee Strip through the 1930s via museum exhibits, an 1895 one-room schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, an implement building, and outdoor exhibits. Perry is also known for its deep wrestling heritage, with monuments and displays in town honoring local champions.
For water and outdoor recreation, Perry Lake supports boating, skiing, swimming, and fishing just outside town. A short drive west at Lake Carl Blackwell, campers can cast a line, hike peaceful trails, ride horseback, or play a round on the scenic disc golf course. Enid, Stillwater, and Oklahoma State University attractions are all within about an hour, making day trips easy from a Perry basecamp.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Perry. April, May, September, and October generally bring warm days and cooler nights, though spring is also the peak severe-weather season in Oklahoma, with thunderstorms, hail, and tornado risk. May is the wettest month of the year, averaging roughly 140 mm of precipitation. Travelers should watch forecasts and know where the nearest shelter is when booking spring stays.
Summers are hot and humid. July is the warmest month, with average highs near 94°F and overnight lows around 73°F, and heat index values that can climb well above 100°F. Sites with shade and hookups for air conditioning are worth booking early, especially around holiday weekends when Lake Carl Blackwell and Perry Lake fill quickly.
Winters are cool and comparatively dry, with occasional cold snaps and light snow mainly falling from January through March. Perry Lake's city-run RV park operates seasonally from April through early November, so travelers looking to stay lakeside outside that window should confirm alternatives in advance.
How to book
Private parks around Perry, including Sooners Corner RV Park, Sunset Ridge RV Park, Morning View RV Park, and Rivershire RV Resort & Camping, generally accept reservations by phone or through their own websites and third-party listing platforms. Interstate-adjacent parks fill fastest on weekend evenings, so a same-day call ahead is smart during peak travel months.
Lake Carl Blackwell, owned and operated by Oklahoma State University, takes reservations through Campspot, where guests can book RV and tent sites, cabins, and pavilions. Cancellations made more than seven days out are issued a camp credit that expires one year from the cancellation date, and no refund is issued within seven days of the reservation. Perry Lake is managed by the City of Perry; contact the city directly for site availability and any permit requirements.
What to expect
Expect open prairie, rolling grassland, and blackjack oak groves rather than dense forest. Wind is a near-constant feature, especially in spring, so leveling blocks, awning tie-downs, and slide-out awareness matter. Sites near I-35 offer convenience but some highway noise; lake-based campgrounds trade that for gravel access roads and more limited cell coverage in spots.
At Lake Carl Blackwell, several RV-friendly sites offer electric and water hookups, particularly in areas like Beaver Cove. Quiet hours run from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., and campers can be asked to leave without refund for quiet-hour violations. Big-rig access is generally good on paved routes into Perry, but check individual campground length limits, especially at lake and city parks with older loops.
